yes, we could easily be in a 6-10 spot next year even with a terrible roster. bird in the hand.

I agree with the yeses. People seem to be wary due to the depth of next year but I feel this year, everything went wrong that could. Also believe that if we win this year, Davidson will add a goalie to keep us from being in the bottom 3 next year

We had a goalie this year and we were in the bottom-8 at the trade deadline. The difference between being in the bottom-4 and being one spot higher in the standings at the time was the same: four points.

Connor Bedard is a franchise-altering player. No one we get this year is going to have the same impact as he'll have next year and you could make a similar argument for Michkov. Send that pick to CBJ and lets move on to next year.

That's good and all, and if the option was 1st or 2nd this year versus 1st or 2nd next year, then next year would clearly be the better option. But that's not the option, it's 1st or 2nd this year versus any first rounder we earn/win next year, and the odds of winning the lottery are against us regardless. In other words...

If we win the lottery this year, we take 1st or 2nd and run.

There isn't a consensus after SW, and if you feel this team ends up in the bottom 5 next season, you can either have one of the top 5(ish) guys next season (all of whom look very promising so far) or try your luck guessing who's the best out of this year's crop.

No shame in liking next year's group more than this year's.

If you win the lottery, you take it and run like hell. Nothing is guaranteed next year. Hell Hawks could be a bottom 2 team next year and get bumped down all the way to #4-5 with shit lottery luck. You literally never know. You take the sure thing if you can get it.

You can only move down 2 spots now.

I get that, but there's no guarantee we get a top five pick even if we bottom out. Worst case scenario, we could end up about standing pat, getting 5-7th overall, and a team or two behind us wins the lottery and we pick even later than that.

I know that the 2022 draft class isn't held in very high regard, but I'd take a second overall now versus potentially a fifth, sixth, seventh, or later overall next year.

Bro what era do you live in? The Hawks have been garbage for so long. No gives a flying duck about the Hawks and what they get in a stupid draft. This team has lost so many valuable assets we are the laughing stock of the entire league, no one is “hating” on us because of your success, get your head out of early 2010s dream land buddy.

Also, let's be honest, the rage from the rest of the league if we won the lottery would be delicious.

I think 2nd overall this year is probably worth about 6-7th overall next year in terms of prospect value, but with how lucky hockey can be you always take the now and then see what happens next year.

I understand that. Ultimately it comes down to what you think Davidson is going to do with this team next season.

If you are someone who sees him trying to make this team as awful as possible next season (something that can be done with as little effort as it'd take to re-sign Lankinen and Delia) or someone who is rebuilding, but want's to make things at least a tiny bit competitive. Given Powers' views a few months back that the Hawks likely won't re-sign Strome or Kubalik because they might hurt the tank, it does feel like Davidson is going to try to ensure a top 5 pick next season (obviously dependent on what happens tonight).

Again, if there was a consensus #2 in this draft, I'd take it happily. But there is Wright and then a handful of names that could go anywhere in the handful of spots after him. Hawks would get the pick of the litter if they had 2nd overall, but whether they nail down the pick or not would come strictly down to luck. I think I'd be just as happy with next years handful of guys over the handful that could be had with a 2nd overall pick now.

And obviously, not counting the potential impact players we could get with what happens tonight, there are other reasons to be for and against a lotto win tonight. If they win, the team they ice next season likely will be a tiny bit better. If they lose, at least you can have a smile on your face every night they're getting their teeth bashed in next season because that raises our chances.

Difficult choices, but I think I'd rather get Wright or keep our 2023 pick.

I want the chance at a high lotto pick next year much more.

It's going to be an amazing draft. Multiple franchise altering picks. And not just at 1OA. I'd rather have the 5th pick there than the 2nd this year.

We should be wanting multiple picks there, not zero.

Lets close the door on the bad trade tonight, and bottom out properly for next year.
