back to logical talk

Sharangovic seems like an obvious trade target. We have a lot of second rounders. He can play all over the lineup top 6 minutes big body and only 25 and see what he grows into.

"Only 25" really isn't a selling point for acquiring a middle-6 player at this stage in the rebuild. Any player acquisition should answer the question - "does the player help the rebuild now?" I would answer - "no", Sharongovic does not help the rebuild now. Maybe he would be the type of player acquired in 2-3 years when the Hawks are further along in the rebuild and needing to supplement the lineup - but they don't need him for 2023/24, and won't need him for at least a couple more years.

Patrick Sharp was 24 when Hawks traded for him, Should the Hawks have not traded for Patrick Sharp?

He was 23 going on 24, but point still stands. Sharp also had playoff success in the AHL and was a champion. He only had 66 NHL games to that point compared to Sharangovic's 205. It's a bit of a different case (Sharp was definitely more skilled as a player) but I love Sharangovic's grit and PK abilities.

Gonna be interesting to see what he wants as an RFA.

Two different situations in terms of where team (re)building was/is.

Here's a question - what if the Hawks already have a Sharongovic type player in their prospect pipeline? That player could come online over the next few years and be on his ELC for 1 or 2 years in the NHL. Would it be better for the rebuild to acquire Sharongovic now or to let a prospect fill that position in a couple years when the rebuild is rounding into shape.

In other words - what's the rush to sign a guy when (1) he isn't needed in 2023/24 and (2) there may be a prospect who emerges that can provide the same level of play at a younger age and for less AAV?

I don’t disagree with this logic. If we can get him for a third round pick, then don’t think twice about it.

The issue I have with the Sharongovic acquisition and many others I've seen over the past few weeks is - why do it now when (1) the Hawks won't be competitive for at least 2-3 years, and (2) the Hawks finally have a deep prospect pipeline that will get even deeper next week - wouldn't the smart thing to do would be let the prospects dictate what they can provide and what the Hawks need to supplement with acquisitions at the appropriate time?

If it doesn't help the rebuild now - in the 2023/24 season - then don't do it. Let the rebuild process play out, which includes letting the prospect pipeline build the new core group as much as it can. When the rebuild process has gotten to the point where supplemental acquisitions are needed - then assess what is needed at that point and go get the player(s).

You can’t ice an AHL team around Bedard. I’m not saying go crazy buying players. But if Shango is cheap, he’s a decent acquisition to hold the fort while the Hawks rebuild.

I keep coming back to the Rebuild Plan. I started a thread asking the question "what is the plan". More specific to the idea of acquiring a player - what is the plan for this summer and the 2023/24 season?

My understanding of the plan would be to acquire players only if it helps meet the objectives for this coming year - which is to say exclusively this summer and the 2023/24 season. The rebuild process will have different objectives for each of the years of the rebuild.

The 2022 draft and the 2022/23 season objectives was to tear down and tank (mission accomplished).

This summer and the 2023/24 season is to start getting prospects NHL experience and be competitive but not necessarily win in order to get into a good position in the 2024 draft lottery. This is accomplished by Davidson not providing a competitive lineup any more than is necessary to help the prospects prosper.

So, if Sharongovic would be the type of player to help Bedard find his footing in the NHL - then a case could be made that he meets the rebuild objectives for this season. If he doesn't really fit that roll - then he doesn't help the rebuild now and isn't needed.

That's true and I agree with that. There needs to be a minimum met so Bedard (and Reichel) don't flounder trying to make it in the NHL. But, there are NHL level players on the team with probably more to be added. The key is acquiring NHL level talent which matches the timeline of the rebuild - 2 or 3 year contracts max.

If Sharongovic would sign a 2 or 3 year deal AND the team deem him good enough to be a benefit to Bedard - then go ahead and acquire him because he would fill a stopgap role the same as Athanasiou. I haven't seen Sharongovic play more than a handful of games and even then wasn't focused on him - so maybe I'm wrong on him - but he doesn't strike me as a good linemate for Bedard.

If you think he's got untapped potential and plays the eay you want. He'd well worth a minor price to get and see if he can develop. He's not a rushing piece, but not every single piece you build up is your own draft picks.

Idk if he's the guy, but some 22-25 year old forwards that could be a complimentary top 6 guys are worth seeking.

Devils fans say he's a soft guy with a great shot, but he PKs a lot. But the devils fans and advanced stats say he's not actually good defensively, so he seems like a bad fit with what they already have

Maybe we can get Hall and one of Lysell, Beecher, or Merkulov for like a middle round pick as our reverse Bickell/Teravainan trade

It would be nice, but I’m assuming there’ll be a team that will find room to take him to try to make the playoffs

I know I'm a hard ass on this but I truly feel that for the rebuild to succeed as well as we hope it will - there must be strict discipline in every move made or not made. Acquiring a player like Sharongovic seems like a move that doesn't need to be made at this time and therefore should not be made.

There are two player acquisitions I would like to see happen - neither one being a specific player. The first acquisition is a player that can be a linemate for Bedard to help him succeed in his first season. The second acquisition is a cap dump (or two) to improve our draft position(s).

That's it.

That wasn't a throw-away comment. It was literally you arguing THAT is the reason you trade Nazar for #8 this year. I disagree, and you don't like that. I want to wait and see what we have in Nazar before we just throw away a player that we haven't had a good chance to look at, yet. It was YOU answering a question that I asked someone else. A question that you have no way of proving, btw. There is literally no way to prove your statement that #8 this year is better than Nazar. You can argue the "value" is better, sure, but you can't just randomly throw things out there like "The #8 pick this year will be better than Nazar because #8 is lower than #13." because unless you're some kind of f***ing psychic, you have no way of knowing that.

I didn't dig my heels(not heals) in on anything. I stated my position, and stand by it. That I don't want to trade Nazar for #8 this year. It's very simple. I'd rather have a better look at him, with a full season being healthy at the NCAA level, than trade him.

You don't know how to use the term "homer" btw... You should google it.

And yes, the reason is because he was hurt last year, and there's only like a 15 game sample size to go on. Shocking... that's the same reason why I want to see what he has before just randomly moving him for a different lottery ticket.

On that note, you get to join my ignore list. Bye! :dunce:
I tried to warn everyone about this dude ages ago with his L takes. Walking contradiction’s everywhere

I'm not so sure about that. With all the buyouts going on, it seems that teams are more willing to eat dead cap and hang onto their picks in a very deep draft.
The only buyouts so far have been OEL and AZ saving some cash. And OEL’s contract was so bad it would have taken a lot more than one first to dump it.

There certainly are rumors of more potential buyouts, so you may end up being right, but nothing actual yet.
