ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS! Except Wade Belak. )

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

Debated this pick but I'm in the same division as Guy Carbonneau and Jonathan Toews - 2 all time great 3rd line centres so a defensive forward was a must, while I didn't go for my 3rd line centre, this line from a bio by @Dreakmur stood out as Guy Lafleur is in my division as well.

But yeah, proud to have bumped Morris a bit and like others, he'll rise in the years to come. He deserves it. Just amazing what time and a newspaper subscription can do for research and I still have the zest for it all these years later. Not as much time, but enough to still get at least 1 of these quality bio's done.

I want a goal scorer at LW who can play some defense, and considering there's plenty of big boys at RW in my division, I'd like a big dude (for his era, at least) to combat that. I'll take Gordon Roberts.

Then, it's about time I take my goalie. Waiting this long for one, he'd better be money in the playoffs. I think there's two left who fit the mould that I could get away with as my starter, and of them I'll go with the safer and probably better option in Grant Fuhr.

With the other two big "money" goaltenders (Fuhr and Smith) being taken here, I'm glad I pulled the trigger on Vasilevskiy during my last set of picks.

When making my decision I was surprised to see that Vasilevskiy's and Fuhr's Vezina/AS records are nearly identical.

I waited pretty long on my goalie in the pre-WW2 draft as well. I think I'm just not big on the position in general.

Frank McGee was done dirty for years in the ATD like all players of his era.

The Pre-Merger project brought light to this disrespect, and several of us decided enough was enough and it was time to shake things up.

Frank McGee has a good case to be the best peak player in the first 1/6th of hockey history, and was the main piece of a dynasty. That alone, should guarantee him a Top 6 role year after year.

Russell Bowie also deserved to rise, as did Tommy Phillips, Weldy Young, Jack Campbell, Frank Fredrickson, and many others yet to be drafted. As it is, I feel all they didn't rise enough.
