This is all possibly true and logical, but it doesn't change the fact that Tavares isn't talented enough to ever earn those accolades.

The idea that he ruined his NHL legacy by going home is a bit dramatic. He went home to raise a family around his family, he put himself first.
1- If he stayed he would have had over 1,000 games played over 1,000 pts and been the captain for 12+ years. He definitely would
Have had his name on the rafters.

2- I never said he ruined his NHL legacy. I just said it was different. I never was mad about him wanting to go home and be close to family and play for his childhood team. Thats the right of every player and professional athlete to want to live and play wherever they want.

His performances in the playoffs ruined his NHL legacy.

There. I said it. ;)

The Leafs leadership overall is awful. It's why O'Reilly left.

It's them AKA the big contracts and then it's everyone else for themselves. Keefe call out the big money and they go to the media and blame Keefe and take zero responsibility. When Keefe calls out the bottom 6 it's crickets from the "leadership group". They just take the pass.

When you accept that much money you should also be accepting the responsibility that comes with it. They don't. They just take the pass management gives them.

Their contracts should be for what they produce as well as elevating other lesser players. Who are these lesser players they have elevated? Bobby McMahon....end of list.
On some level that’s on the coach. I don’t think any team is best served airing its dirty laundry publicly.

Let's be real, the inmates run the asylum in that locker room. The coach is there to bark orders, don't upset anyones feelings and tell a few fart jokes.

Keefe, if things don't go his away will whine to the media about his 'woe is me' and 'why are you mean to us' mentality. Why was this guy thought off so highly?

He is a bad captain yes but not even close to being the worst. There are many captains in history that fail to make the playoffs over a long stretch.

It’s not his fault. The leafs need to be saved from themselves. They have unlimited money but sometimes, they just shouldn't use it.

Obviously, at the time, the fans would’ve gone ballistic if the Leafs passed on Tavares. But some GM needs to be able to make the right call there and tell the fans to can it and wait for the results.

He did score 2 series clinching goals. There’s always that lol

Bro won 2 series in 15 years, that's his legacy?

Still can't believe the hype that Tavares got when he was drafted 1st overall. He's pretty much a less skilled Joe Thornton, who just can't get it done in the playoffs.

That's an insult to Joe. Thornton had some good runs where he did lead his team.

I can see the retirement introductions now!

Crosby - "He won 3 Cups, 2 Conn Smythes, 2 Art Ross trophies, 2 Harts ..."
Ovechkin - "He won a Cup, a Conn Smythe, 3 Harts, a half dozen Rockets ..."
Malkin - "He won 3 Cups, 1 Conn Smythe, 1 Art Ross, 1 Hart ..."
Tavares - "He uh umm ... scored 2 series clinching goals in the first round ... or something"

I'm so glad he turned down the Sharks 8year/13M contract offer in 2019.

could you imagine?

He was still good in 2019. But Leafs lose to Boston in 7 no matter what their team structure is.

He did score their series clincher, had another strong OT play. But hes just not a high end 1c

Sometimes you need to send message. I see your point if it's something the players haven't been told before hand but I doubt this was the case. He didn't say anything that wasn't obvious. The Leafs big contracts could use a little discomfort in their lives. It's good for them. If they don't want to get called out, play better.

Point also being it wasn't ok for him to say that to the stars but it was fine for the little people in the bottom 6.

As a Canucks fan, I disagree with the notion that Tavares is the worst captain ever.

That's Mark Messier's title.

So are they gonna try to bully him into waiving his NMC?
I feel there is a way to salvage this.. he stays this year on his deal and then takes short term, team friendly deals. Can still help the team win in a lesser role and make it all worth it. He's not disliked personally by his mates or any fans with common sense.

Others need to go but this can work.

Getting pretty old. Pretty likely he will soon be a player that’s kinda useless at any cap hit.

Many Canucks fans would say this Messier guy was way way WAY worse.
Yes, they would. And they'd be wrong.

The whole concept of a distant fanbase judging that a captain is bad because the team just lost a playoff series is completely absurd.

Also, in today's NHL a captain doesn't really do much. They still have to have an open-door relationship with the coach and they have to be reasonably-robotic and inoffensive to the media and... that's about it. It's not 1980 anymore where the team captain basically runs the room and if top players don't defer to the leadership group's emotional tone and style of play, then that player is ostracized and traded or sent down.

Anyway, the game is won and lost on the ice, not according to an alphabetical letter being placed on a particular jersey.
