He has been quoted as saying he loves playing here. While obviously players almost never say they don't like where they're playing, it does suggest he'd be open to a couple years at a reasonable rate. And then we wouldn't have to trade away yet another 3rs rounder to get him back at the trade deadline.

He was bad the first time. This time around he was pretty good in his own end and not too bad with the puck. Whether he'd keep it up over a longer contract, who knows. It looks like Schenn was alright for Nashville this season after being mid at the end of last regular season and much better in the playoffs. Committing a lot of money and term to that kind of player seems like an unnecessary gamble when guys like Benoit can be had for nothing.

Fun fact: Lyubushkin was only one for a single 5v5 goal against all series... you can guess which one it was. Meanwhile, Rielly was also on for 6 for but 3 against, and was all over the place in a bad way in his own end.

I think you need to be careful with guys like this and Edmundson. They can be good in short stretches, but over a long sample size they show themselves to be the 5/6 defensemen they are. It's fine if you can sign them to manageable contracts, but why would Edmundson take a pay cut on his $3.5 million salary? Assuming he wants the same or more (and it will be the latter), the Leafs cannot pay that. The only reason they could take him this year was because of double retention on his salary.

Term and AAV aside, I'd probably be fine to have him return on the condition that he'd be paired with either Rielly or McCabe (meaning blueliners with offensive ability that play higher in the lineup) while not necessarily being looked at to average top four minutes.

You’re not really paying a 3rd for boosh, you’re paying a 3rd to have him at a negligible cap hit. If his UFA price is 2.5 x 2 I’d pretty comfortably pay a 4th or 5th to have that be around 1mil instead. Having him playing low intensity minutes on a basement team to stay fresh helps too.

Well, he was terrible the first time around, but he was great this time.

If he comes cheap, sure, re-sign him.

He also brings almost nothing to the table other than defending decently, so hoping it isn't long-term or too much money, he seems replaceable.

These types of player are a lot easier to negotiate with then star forwards who score a lot.

They can probably get Lyubhskin for only a little bit more than they currently pay LIljegren. The peanut gallery will ofc complain about him during the regular season but you know you're getting a very effective and physical D for the playoffs.
