Why is this thread still going?

The Toronto Maple Leafs aren't special. Since 2006, they've won exactly the same number of playoff series as my team has, and I'm a frickin' Blue Jackets fan. If this club wasn't located in Toronto, we would just acknowledge reality: They're not that good.

But since they ARE from Toronto, the idea that they have some divine right to be the center of attention lives rent free in their heads.
Err, I agree with your overall sentiment, but it's pretty evident that if that idea lives rent free in anyone's head, it's yours.

Call it denial, but as a Leafs fan I think these past few seasons have been more about them coming out on the wrong end after a hard fought battle than it is about a group of "chokers".

They came back to force Game 5 in 19-20, had the heartbreaker loss in 7 to Montreal where they lost 2OT games in 20-21, lost to Tampa by a goal in Game 7 in 21-22, admittedly got beat up by Florida in 22-23 (at least winning one round), then fought back this year from 3-1 down only to lose Game 7 in OT. Any of those series, except the Florida one, could have gone their way with the right bounce at the right time.

How many of these series also had opponent goalies put up .940 or .950 save percentages now? It's not like the Leafs are just dumping a bunch of soft shots in all of a sudden, they've also run into goalies playing hot.

I think the team could use some change, and I get because they've lost they're going to get labelled as chokers, and fair enough to anyone who wants to label them as such, but this isn't a team you're ashamed to watch play that just completely falls apart when the playoffs start, though the first few games of the Bruins series were admittedly very painful.

Marner is the only player I feel just isn't built for playoff hockey, and even with him, it wouldn't shock me if all of a sudden he puts up 10-15 points in a 7 game series and figures it out.

They're not going to be able to blow up this core in one season, but we'll probably see a coaching change, so it'll be interesting to see how things go next year, though if they play another Game 7 against the Bruins I'm not sure I'll have the nerves to watch it.

About these 35 times they made the playoffs, it should be 34, as one year they lost in the play-in and thus, technically, they did not get to the playoffs.

Also, check these regular season records where they reached the playoffs:

1979-80: 35-40-5 (if you think that's bad, continue reading)
1980-81: 28-37-15 (yikes)
1982-83: 28-40-12 (yikes bis)
1985-86: 25-48-7 (yikes tertio)
1986-87: 32-42-6 (one of their better efforts)
1987-88: 21-49-10 (yikes bis squared)...
Thank you for adding these details to the Leafs (lack of) prowess. Their fans should stay a bit more humble, shouldn‘t they?

100+ years = 6 cups.

:)
WTF? They’ve won the Cup this century, they’ve won it inside of 50 years, they’ve won it since other teams came into the League…the Leafs haven’t been to the Finals since 19f***ing67, they’ve one 1 round with this core…and you’re yapping about Cup wins!?

Weird. Especially since they got sent home again.

I couldn't help but have a look::

2016-17: .925
2017-18: .903
2018-19: .928
2019-20: .952
2020-21: .932
2021-22: .897
2022-23: .875 and .943
2023-24: .944

So 3 series over .940, 3 series under .905 (with a very bad .875, their only win out of these 9) and 3 series between .925 and .932.

Thank you for adding these details to the Leafs (lack of) prowess. Their fans should stay a bit more humble, shouldn‘t they?
But they're not the only ones.

Every fan base have similar type of fans (my team, right or wrong).

Interesting, the four around .930 are still Vezina-calibre stats, the way I look those numbers is that 6/9 series their opponents had .925 or over, which is very good to excellent goaltending, 2 series they got a bit of a break with them being around .900, and the only series they won was when the opponent goalie had terrible numbers.

Bit of a chicken and egg thing, but interesting.
