A bad night, but there was a shining star in the void and his name is Alex Alexeyev, who nabs the prized game puck.

No honorable mentions.

Alexyev was strong tonight. Moved the puck a lot quicker. Took some good shots. Much more decisive. Good sign. Assuming his fancies match the eye test given the game puck.

We can only hope he improves. Defensemen take time and of course his draft status is something else we hope factors in.

now lost 7 of the last 8. They don’t deserve to make it in playing like this down the stretch.

None of the teams fighting for that spot do.

As frustrating as this is, I think the inconsistency is to be expected. We have a team made up of kids who are playing their first full NHL seasons and aging vets who are close to retirement. We don't have very many players in their prime. Strome is, and he is their best and most consistent forward. Wilson is supposed to be as well, but he hasn't been very good.

What is disappointing is that they are playing their worst hockey to end the season. You would hope that they would be competitive, and they haven't been.

Yeah. 6’4. 230 or so. First round pick. Would be great to see him come around. Caps will have a touch decision here. Sign a 1LD (moves Fever to 3LD) or trust Alexyev to be 3LD and sign depth in Hershey (Aktell and Johansen).

Agreed. Beyond whatever cap space they'll have open up...I don't know how you run it back and not make additional subtractions when they've had a playoff spot put on a platter for them. They've botched it and the task won't get any easier next season most likely.

Forget Ovechkin's early season woes and the Kuznetsov sideshow. Credit for getting back in it but they were able to shrink the gap in large part thanks to teams falling apart. Hard to believe the East will be as weak next season so they're going to need to think long and hard about how they're constructed.

I definitely agree that they might as well just move on from Jensen and TVR. There's no upside there. At best they're serviceable but it's time to usher in a new era on the back-end, something more capable of not overloading Carlson. Something more dynamic. A shame they'll likely miss out on Parekh/Yakemchuk.

Overall they need talent that's more consistently capable of making their teammates better because this remaining core mix doesn't have enough of it. Not enough swagger, not enough dialed in poise or ability to create at will. Really disappointing lack of offensive production when it's mattered most.

A damn shame.

Almost Canada
All the other teams in race for final two spots showed up ready to play tonight. Even the frickin Flyers won. Caps alone look like they’re running on fumes
I mean, the Flyers gave up 9 to the Habs just two nights ago. All of these teams mostly suck. But as you noted, the Caps' inconsistency is to be expected.

They pretty much out of gas. When you have goal differential that high it's literally playing with fire and hoping the goalie bails the team out. The part that frustrates me is the fancy trying to do things they can't do and not just keep it simple.

Yep and the top two seeds don't want to play Pittsburgh in a first round matchup.
