First 5 minutes the Comets had 3 10 bell chances and missed the net on all 3 of them.

Comets to the PP at 14:11.

1 shot, a weak wrister from Wotherspoon.

2 seconds to go and big pileup behind the net. 2 roughing penalties out of it.

12:31 to go. Toronto is giving the Comets a lesson in how to shut down an opponent with a lead.

11:32 to go and the Comets get another pp. They haven't had a sniff on the last 3.

Hildeby makes a stop off a backhander in the high slot.

When the Comets have an opportunity it takes them so long to shoot the puck that the shot has little chance of hitting twine.

Nothing on that PP either.

Another PP at 11:50. It's not likely anything will come from it. They have had 4 others and were barely able to put together more than a wimpy shot. There PP has not been a positive asset all season.

0/5 on the PP in a game trailing 5-1 cost them a chance to creep back into this one.

This one comes up just as empty as the other 4. This team will require a coach next season who has some kind of an idea of how to run a PP because no one here this season has a clue.
Peripheral telegraphed passes then trying to force what turns out to be a failed pass inside or across the box and never having a shot from a dangerous spot is not how a PP can have even a chance of scoring.

Comets have a very decisive advantage in shots on goal, but the majority have not challenged Hildeby. They have hit 2 posts.

Big disadvantage for the Comets is their obvious lack of speed.

Comets lose this one 5-1. The Marlies merely shut them down in the 3rd and just ran out the clock.

Very little to recap here.

Toronto Marlies 5 Utica Comets 1

SOG:
UTC - 11 14 12 = 37
TOR - 12 4 3 = 19

The numbers look like the Comets were the dominant team and must have been severely snake bitten. Nothing of the sort. They were severely beaten and were never in the game after scoring the 1st goal in the first minute of the game. They were terrible defensively as a team while the Marlies built up their lead. Once they had it at 3-1 after 1 they just played a defensive game, took advantage of their 4 chances in the 2nd to make it 5-1 and then just coasted into the final horn. For a team right on the cusp of rescuing their season, the Comets laid their biggest egg of the season.

Only goal:
Criscuolo (16) from Parent (29)

Schmid 14/19

Not a good night for Akira, but he was left to the wolves for the most part. Maybe a weak 1and another he might have had, but the goals were scored from in close on hard shots in uneven situations. One tipped in by his own D-man. One a misdirected shot from 2 feet. Another through a perfect screen by Wotherspoon. No, can't blame Akira for this one and the support he should have had was missing anyways.

Tomorrow same time (4 p.m.) same place (Toronto). They are still in this thing, but the pressure just intensified. I won't say they choked, but they did not play anywhere near a good hockey game particularly from a defensive team standpoint.

They are battling this out with 2 teams who are in just as tough a spot as the Comets. All 3 know they have to win.
Today:
- Laval beat Springfield 7-4 and picked up 2 points and now lead the Comets by 3 points with 4 games left to play
- Belleville defeats current 1st place North Division leader, Syracuse 5-2. They move 1 point ahead of Utica with 6 games left just like Utica. Both have 2 games in hand on Laval.

Laval 72 points with - 4 games left
Belleville 72 Points - 6 games left
Utica 69 Points - 6 games left

These 3 teams knew coming into this weekend that winning was paramount.

Laval
- lost last night to Syracuse
- won today over Springfield
1-1

Belleville
- won last night over Springfield
- won today over Syracuse
2-0

Utica
- lost today to Toronto
- tomorrow play Toronto again
0-1 with 1 more to play

A win vs Toronto puts the Comets right back in it with 71 points and 5 games to go.

Belleville would have the advantage with a game in hand on the Comets and 2 on Laval.
The Comets would have a game in hand on Laval.

If I was a betting man I'd put my money on Belleville to end up in 5th place and the playoffs with Laval and Utica on the outside looking in.

19 Fitzgerald/ 21 Stevens/ 92 Clarke
79 Laberge/ 16 Engaras/ 37 Wendt

D-Pairs:
83 Vilen/ 8 Hatakka

93 Misyul/ 5 Russo

Goal - 50 Daws

Scratches:
Schmid (BU)
Kallgren (H)
Felix (H)
Vukojevic (H)
Osmanski (H)
Middendorf (H)
Stillman (INJ)
Gambardella (INJ)
Ibragimov (INJ)

Willman puts home the rebound at the keeper's right post off Dowling's shot after a TO turnover. Dowling's shot hit the post and went right to Willman on the far post.

Willman 5:15
1-0 Utica

TV TO
13:46 to go
The game went almost all of the time before the Comets goal without a whistle.

Comets to the PK
Laberge 2 for hooking

# 7 PP in the AHL

Comets were out 2 on 1 and the pass was too far ahead and they go for a change.

Willman skates it up and behind the TO net. Then Hatakka slows it up at the TO blueline.
I don't think Daws had to make a save. Really good kill.

Clarke another shit pass on the breakout and To is back in.

Toronto has woken up. Daws makes his 2nd stop.

TV TO
9:42 to go

Off the draw Schmelzer just got it to Criscuolo on the right side of the dot and he tipped it back to Parent who 1-timed it home. G_______O________A__________L!!!!!!!!

Parent at 10:53
2-0 Comets

Comets back to the PK.
A pure BS call. Clarke for hooking. All he did was pat the player's hip. Not even close to hooking.

Comets send it all the way down.

1 minute to go.

Back out to the red line.

Misyul loses his stick. Centering pass off the end boards and Daws comes up big. Without a stick Misyul still couldn't block the pass down on his knees.

Comets get it out to the neutral zone.
Shot deflects out of play.
Lose the draw shot wide. PK successful. Comets get it out and regroup.

Clarke can do nothing with the puck unless it's in a position to shoot.

Puck deflected out of play past Daws.

TV TO
5:10 to go

Wotherspoon walked and Daws stops the backhander.

Dowling hits the post for 2nd time!

1st comes to an end.

2-0 Comets

SOG:
7-6 Toronto

Not to get ahead of myself, but the Comets seem to have come to an understanding that unless they play tight D against a team that likes to run and gun, they will have little chance.

They played transition hockey for that period and it worked. Let's see if they keep it going.

The Thunder is playing OTT’s ECHL team, Allen Americans, in Texas.

Hello Cleveland!

Reminds me of the walk at the old "new" RIT rink. You had to wear skate guards and walk across concrete from the opposite side of their building. I played them there last in 1972. That rink became a recreational rink for the student population. They have a beautiful new modern state of the art arena. That kind of thing happens when you become potential NCAA final 4 material. They went to the Frozen 4 in 2010. This season they lost to #2 in the land BU in the regional semifinal.

Period 2
The start of the 2nd period is being presented by a camera in the nose bleed section. I'm sitting high above Daws and looking at the Comets playing offensively at the other end of the ice. If they don't fix this it will be like listening to Shaya on the radio.

Willman gets flattened at the TO net mouth and Legare goes after Matteo Pietroniro who hit Willman. The two fight. This is the same guy that Stillman fought yesterday and was injured enough that he left the game and is out today as well.

Sorted out:
Legare gets:
2 for instigation
5 for fighting
10 minute misconduct- instigating

Pietroniro gets:
5 for charging
5 for fighting
all penalties at 1:12

Willman goes off to the dressing room.

4 on 4 for 2 minutes and then the Comets get a 3-minute major PP.

The picture is back.
Daws a save on a shot from the slot.

Comets keep blocking shots. They did none of that yesterday.

4 on 4 is done.

Comets to the 3 minute PP. Comets into the Toronto end. Dowling takes it into the corner and it's knocked off his stick to Stevens, who sends it back on the point to Vilen and he sends it across to Schmelzer. Ryan sends it back across to Dowling outside the top of the left cricle. He takes it and turns back towards the circle. He skates forward and
shoots it in full stride right from the top of the circle
------------and-------------------------HE----------------------

S_________C________O_________R_________E_______S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dowling a PPG at 3:51 - 400th AHL point!
3-0 Comets

Nothing more on the PP.

TV TO
13:20 to go

Schmelzer a shot gloved for a whistle.

Engaras shot deflected over the net.

Comets lines are being juggled to account for Willman's absence.

Every puck Clarke touches ends up in Toronto possession. This poor kid is never going to see NJ with his total lack of puck possession skills.

Daws a glove save and a whistle.

TV TO
9:38 to go

Utica on the PP. Blandisi 2 for roughing.

Dowling shot from the circle. Hits the keeper's glove and pops up. Stevens into the crease and SCORES!

NOPE - waved off immefdiately. Scored with his glove. No goal.

Russo 1-timer stopped.

Even strength.

Comets are getting a stick on almost every pass and shot attempt in their zone. Night and day from yesterday. Amazing a head coach couldn't have gotten that point across yesterday very early on or at least by the end of the 1st. Sheesh!

Dowling steals the puck just off the edge of the TO net front and shoots it wide!!!!!!!!!

Wendt takes a pass and brings it into the zone. He fires a pass across to Engaras who shoots from the left circle. Stopped, but Fitzgerald was crossing through the crease and picked up the rebound and threw it back up into the top of the open side.

G_____________________0_________________A________________L!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ryan Fitzgerald scores his 1st of the season! His 1st as a Comet after 20 GP!
Dylan Wendt get his 1st AHL point in his first game played. Beautiful hard tape to tape pass to Engaras for a shot and Fitz canned the rebound.

Ryan Fitzgerald at 16:51
4-0 Comets

Schmelzer shot smothered for a whislte. That shot came after a long sequence of Comets possession working to set up a good scoring chance.

Daws a good stop but big rebound swept up by a Comet stick.

Fan in the stands happily brandsdhing a Devils jersey.

Wendt takes the puck at the left side blue line and goes 1 on 1 with Pietroniro. He turns into the middle and goes towards the net. He spins away from Piet...'s pressure and at the same time slides a pass to a streaking Engaras who just can't gather it in. That was a goal in the making. This kid is starting to feel it after moving very carefully until the end of this 2nd period. This kid has some real promise. He is good with the puck, at this juncture anyways. He had no problem taking that puck directly at a big 3rd yr pro AHL D-man and created a very good scoring chance.

Laberge gets 2 minutes for tripping in the offensive zone with 0:26 seconds left. Not a good penalty to take.

2nd comes to an end

4-0 Comets
SOG:
8-7 Utica

2-period total:
14-14

Period 3
Comets on the PK to open the period.
Blueline shot gloved and held by Daws.
Penalty killed.

Another shot gloved by Daws.

Misyul called for interference at 2:17. This is not the way to play the 3rd.

Daws a huge save and then he makes another!
His first true serious challenges.

This is a good PP.

Another stop and a shot goes wide.
Nico comes up big again!

Comets send it out. TO comes back in and Daws stops another and holds on.

That kill belonged to Daws.

Clarke has no idea how to play against fast opponents that come to him whenever he has the puck.

2 on 1 and Daws is big.

Toronto is coming on with everything they have and the Comets are trying to shut them down. Not their best skillset.
And I'm right as Blandisi gets behind the D just like yesterday and is in clean for a goal. When they try to play shutdown defense they spend too much time standing around and coasting.

Toronto at 6:16
4-1 Comets.

Marlies right back in.

Now the Comets come in 2 on 1. Engaras passes to Wendt and he fires it wide.

Comets to the PP. Villeneuve 2 for high-sticking
TV TO
11:44 to go

Another call on TO. Comets get the extra man on and the Comets get a good chance in close before the Marlies touch the puck.
Max Lajoie 2 for high sticking.

5 on 3 for 1:13

Lose the draw and its down the ice..

Dowling stopped by a good save.
1st penalty is over.
2nd is over.

Wendt chases down a Marlie in the O-zone as they bchase after a loose puck and he is too aggressive and gets 2 for hooking.
Penalty at 12:09

TV TO
7:51 to go

Comets skate it out and shoot it in.

Comets send it down.

Toronto's goalie is gone with over 6 to go. 6 on 4

Penalty is over, but the keeper stays on the bench. 6 on 5

Daws a stop.
Schmelzer shoots it down. Misses the net. Icing.

4:52 to go.

Comets send it slowly down the ice.

Blandisi smacked hard on the boards by Stevens.

Daws a stop. Daws another and he holds on.

TV TO
3:56 to go

Comets ice it off the faceoff.

Legare comes on the ice and Russo hits him at center ice and he makes no mistake scoring into the open net.

Legare at 16:45
Comets 5-1

Daws stops a shot and smothers it.

Icing Comets 1:56 to go.
Last minute.
Icing Toronto 0:46 to go

Daws gloves one with 0:17 to go.

This one is over.
Comets Win It 5-1.

Sorry Comets lol, hurry up and get your season over with and give Adirondack back the players you kept here all season lol. We had a fantastic season, our attendance has been fantastic, and now Adirondack deserves a good playoff run.
Nature of the beast. We had the same exact issue with the NJ devils.
Utica exists for them.
Adirondack exist for us.
Who do you get your temporary replacements from? LOL

Utica, NY
Speaking of Adirondack Thunder players, the Comets posted on Twitter after Schmid was called up to the Devils that Poulter and Ghantous were being called up to Utica but they then deleted the Tweet. They may have jumped the gun before it was official but I wouldn't be surprised to see both in Providence this weekend.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Akira has already been returned and Clarke has been recalled according to AHL.com today.

Halonen is listed as a return as well, but he has been returned and recalled on paper for weeks now so we''ll have to wait and see on him as well.

Wendt looked good in Toronto on Sunday.
Ghantous didn't embarrass himself in his one game either. Both should at least be on the Comets roster.

After last Sunday's game in Toronto, the Comets would currently be very shorthanded based upon the existing injuries, NJ's callups, and the injuries in Toronto.

Exisitng injuries:
Ibragimov
Gambardella

Ibragimov is LTIR with a shoulder injury.
Gambardella has not returned since his injury on 3/29.

Injured in Toronto:
Willman
Stillman

Willman and Stillman were hurt in Toronto. Stillman in a fight on Saturday and Willman on a brutal hit in open ice on Sunday. Stillman didn't play Sunday and Willman did not return to the game after his hit Sunday.

To NJ:
Bowers
Clarke

There is no mention of call-ups from Adirondack on AHL.com transactions. It does have Halonen listed as an add from NJ. Can't believe that is an actual return in that he has been returned and recalled so many times in recent days just for paper reasons that I won't list him as a Comet until something formally is stated on this end.

Now, the way things are relayed to the public here it's possible that any of Gambardella, Willman, Stillman, and Halonen will be okay for Providence tomorrow. Maybe Ghantous will be there. Maybe besides Ghantous someone else from Adirondack gets a call. However, at the moment the Comets have 11 roster forwards.

This is a terrible time for the Comets roster to be messed with. NJ is out of the playoffs, but the Comets are still in a very tight contest for a playoff spot. Halonen, Bowers, and Clarke are in NJ

Belleville defeated Toronto last night. The win jumped them over Laval and into the 5th playoff spot.

Toronto's losses to Utica on Sunday and Belleville last night leaves the Sens only 2 points behind Toronto for 4th.

Laval is now in 6th only 1 point ahead of the Comets while Belleville leads them by 3.

Toronto, Belleville, and Utica all have 5 games left.

After Laval plays Cleveland tonight they will only have 3.

Clevleland is 1 point behind 2nd place Rochester and 2 behind 1st place Syracuse.

Every team in this Division is playing a very important game every time they face off from now until it's over. Utica is the one in the most critical win out situation.

Bellville's max is 84 Pts
Laval's is 80
Utica's is 81

Belleville and Laval end their season with a back to back. That could be the lucky horseshoe for the Comets or the death knell.

Utica's must win schedule is a moutnain to climb. They play 2 against #2 Atlantic Division Providence away, then a back to back home and home with current North Division #1 Syracuse, and finish the season at home against current #2 Rochester. They could easily be out of the race after this weekend or even closer to that playoff spot. Talk about pressure.

A depleted roster is the worst that could happen to them. NJ actually has an opportunity to help their farm. Highly unlikely though.

Cleveland came through and beat Laval tonight 6-4. Thus Laval, with only games left still only hold 6th over the Comets by a single point.

Cleveland is now tied with Syracuse for #1 in the North Division.

Comets must take care of their own business. If they are hoping for the 2 above them to falter, they will fail. Belleville holds a decisive advantage as it stands now. They are going to have to lose 2 games while the Comets win out for Utica to squeeze past them by a point.

That's of course assuming Belleville doesn't lose all 5 they have left. LOL

Period 1

Comets get a PP at 5:15
Comets get 4 sots and Bussi was good.

Comets on their 2nd PP at 8:27.
Not much doing on this one.
Duran comes back into the zone from the penalty box. Duran comes back into the zone from the penalty box. He picks up a loose puck at the top of the left circle. He skates it up the ice, crosses the blueline, cuts behind Brown who was coming up the ice with him to his right into the middle and shoots..... He scores.

Duran unassisted at 10:39
1-0 Bruins

Bruins come up ice. Lambert takes the puck down the left side and backhands a shot from inside the bottom of the left circle and it goes over the shoulder of Daws for goal #2. That can't be called a good goal. The first I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he was perhaps screened, but I am thinking these were 2 goals he should have had.

Lambert at 12:34
2-0 Bruins

Russo gets 2 for interference and Loheri gets 2 for diving at 13:57.

4 on 4
Daws a big glove grab from about 10 feet in the left circle.

Wendt got around a defender on a good move. Was stopped right in front and Bussi stopped his rebound as Wendt got it back on net passing in front after his original shot.

Laberge and Abate drop 'em.
5 each for fighting at 19:13.

Now Fitzgerald is called for hooking at 19:22.

That's it for period 1.

2-0 Providence

SOG:
12-9 Comets.

Period 2
Comets start the period on the PK.

:15 seconds in and Richard gets 2 for tripping when he disrupted a shorthanded chance on a turnover at the Providence blueline.

4 on 4 and the Comets will get a short PP when Fitzgerald's penalty is up.

Comets go to the PP. Halonen is stopped from the slot and and he swats the puck off a Bruin stick right in front and it's______________________IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GOAL Halonen and the Comets are back in this one.

Halonen PPG at 1:36

2-1 Bruins.

Daws a big stop on a Bruin receiving a pass all alone to the left of Daws.

Legare stopped from the slot as gets a Bruin turnover all alone.

Bruins get into the Comets zone off the rush and Daws makes a big stop right in front, but another Bruin gathers the rebound and puts it past Daws who couldn't recover to get back on the far left side of his crease.

It's back and forth for the remainder of the period, but Parent takes a penalty for tripping at 19:59.

3-1 Providence

SOG:
9-8 Comets

A little scoreboard watching - Rochester and Belleville are tied at 2 after 2 in Rochester. The 2 will lock horns again tomorrow.
