I keep hearing physical maturity packaged good balanced skills is what's need for Q for a 16yr old but you would think skating / smarts might be a better fit, find out draft day.

For sure, a balance of all the tools (skating, skills, IQ) + good size is what everybody wants. But every year, we see highly considered players by CSR who get drated much later. Most of those are limited talent players with good size. You don't often see a small player ranked high by CSR who gets drafted much later but you see the opposite quite often.
That's my point.
Some examples:
Sean Larochelle (2017) - 5'9"/152 drafted #20 when listed #47 by CSR
Ryan Francis (2017) - 5'7"/150 drafted #21 when listed #63 by CSR
Jordan Spence (2018) - 5'10"/160 drated #20 when listed #77 by CSR
Miguel Tourigny (2018) - 5'6"/150 drafted #23 when listed #81 by CSR
Jordan Dumais (2020) - 5'8"/144 drafted #18 when listed #32 by CSR
Felix Gagnon (2020) - 5'10"/144 drafted #24 when listed #71 by CSR

To me, to reach the QMJHL, a good combination of work ethic, skating and smarts is probably the best combination to have.
Then, if you add skills to that, you'll get an offensive player.
Physical maturity will likely help the player reach the QMJHL and have an impact faster, but won't make him better necessarily once they're 18 or 19.

Imagine it was still Covid-no viewings for 2 years for 04 and 05 kids. No out of Province tournaments, no Gatorade, no Atlantics. Players in Atlantic Canada lost out. These kids are very lucky to have those viewings. Wish them all luck in the draft!
Wonder will CSR come out with a third list before draft day rolls around so we can see how wrong we were in our predictions ????
This draft seems to look a lot like 2019 draft (2003 born players). Very few defencemen in the top end and very few righter-hander overall as well in the first couple of rounds.

Amazing how the placement of players (outside the top 90) on the CSR list can so drastically different by teams come draft day. Player in 2022 CSR, rated C in 6-8th round CSR but drafted 252nd, in another year player ranked in CSR 9-12 rounds gets draft 75th.
If the Apr Q Cup had been top 120 QC-Atlantic combined, how many Atlantic would have been picked for Q-Cup?
In 2020, a player ranked as a 5th rounder (82nd overall) by CSR didn't even get drafted! When we say that CSR loves size.
Just wondering why Elliott Desmarais ranked so low if they like size. He is over 222lbs. Coached against him in atome. Kid was 50lbs heavier than most.
If a player is already 225 lbs, there is likely not much more room for development I'd say.. A guy that's decent at 6'2 170 lbs right now could in theory ''become a monster'' at physical maturity (that's what they assume).
Tyson Hinds was a bottom pairing guy in Midget AAA his draft year, but he was tall and lean and played the game correctly. With physical maturity, he has become a totally different player. I guess that's what they're looking for but not every player is going to develop that way lol
There's nothing to explain. Focus on the tools only and put the size aside. Then re-evaluate the player's ranking. Pretty simple.
Agree totally . We seem to be moving back towards the dinosaur days of Don Cherry where if you were big you had to prove you couldn't play and if you were small you had to prove you could . The most blatant examle of the stupidity of that line of thinking is the history of Marty St Louis . Al MacNeil and the Calgary Flames in all their wisdom decided that he was TOO SMALL to play in the NHL . Now we all know where the falacy of that belief led to ......Hockey Hall of Fame !!! Size is definitely an advantage if you have skills and UNDERSTAND the game of hockey . Lack of size leads to the development of a tremendous work ethic and a greater understanding of what it takes to be a solid hockey player . Diminuative players are some of the most exciting players to watch . Evaluate the skills and the understanding of the game and allow size to be a less relevent factor than it now is . Scouts lose a lot of credibility when they only look at size . It quite often leads to a"Seizeable " mistake !!!
Heard there was a big spring event in Moncton for the 08s. Most of the top kids there …….how did these guys look?

All 3 of Huang, Nobert and Lecompte are pretty much local guys. Who they pick at #3 will really dictate the rest of the draft.
Some speculations that picks #4 -#5 and #6 might get traded. Val d'or would like to trade for 2 lower 1st round picks, Rimouski would be open to deal for an 18 or 19 years old forward and Drummondville might give the #6 and other 1st round picks to obtain Gauthier.
