Re: the Ishbia stuff above:

Maybe social/local/national media will acknowledge the nuance of sports ownership? That it is a spectrum and not binary of good/bad? That not every owner is a savior & that not every owner is Bill Wirtz or Bill Bidwill or Jerry Reinsdorf or Marge Schott?

LFG. Team Meruelo. Because he’s the guy we have. It starts 6/27. Figure this sh-t out. Get the pack back.

That's absolutely true.. but it seems like there's an increasing number of very rich people who believe that having money means that you are capable of greatness in EVERY discipline that requires money. It's a classic example of the Peter Principle in action.

Bless you for your optimism.

lol, lmao even

It's been how many years, has there been even a single proposal to do something with that land? No.

That land has no value. Literally zero. Zilch. Nada. None. And it never will until it's remediated. Which will cost millions that nobody is going to want to pay for, least of all tax payers. No developer is going to buy that land, remediate it, and then...what? What is it going to be used for? Can't use it for apartments, so what else is left? An arena? A casino? An entertainment district? Who the f*** is going to buy it and remediate it for those purposes? Nobody, that's who. The only hope is that the city grows enough that it's not so out of the way and the city takes whatever it costs to remediate themselves, hoping that the sale will outstrip the debt they had to take on.

I see that about as likely as Meruelo growing wings and proclaiming himself the sun god Apollo.
Tempe market place was a toxic dump that needed major soil remediation. It would have been great to have AM build on that land and it would have been beneficial to Tempe. In the proposal there was a lot going back to the city, for example use free use of the facilities, Coyotes would be paying for traffic control and that was on top of all the tax revenue that could have gone to the city rather than being a tax burden which is dump (that caught fire once). The new dump built in Phoenix makes the one in Tempe redundant and unnecessary expense.

The information war was a total miss by the team, I had calls at least twice a week to tell me how bad the arena was going to be. The opposition signs out numbered the signs for the project 4 to 1 on every corner. There was no effort from the organization to show that they did their due diligence and point out all the benefits, and really put themselves out there. Holmberg said they would have been happy to have had them on the show in the morning but no one reached out to the radio station to entertain the idea.

I remember a major sticking point for some people was how much traffic there would be and I would tell each person that there is a traffic study that they can look at and see the impact of the entertainment district. It really came down to people not wanting Tempe to be anything different than what it is now. A lot of old people that voted no because are afraid of change.

I have zero faith in anything Meruelo and have essentially accepted the Coyotes are dead.

RIP Yotes2000 (The year I became a Yotes fan)

Hello Knights2017 (The year I thought the Yotes were moving and they became my defecto backup team.. well 7 years later here we are) It's weird to say my son is a VGK fan and already watched "His team" win a Cup at 4 years old.. I purposely kept him away from knowing the Coyotes even existed until they got an arena plan. So as we do our family travels to Vegas we will try to catch games and watch from afar.

Sure, prove me wrong Alex Meruelo.. but I'm not holding my breathe and I'll be moving on until you get dirt moving and a foundation built.

Arizona sports is just so... silly. Everyone knows it. Yotes gone, Suns superteam swept, Cards suck and dont care. Dbacks maybe but their owndership keeps making a stink. WTF man.

What we have is, the idea of this "This is a growing community" 30 years ago. And now it's become the "Get off my lawn!" community. And I use the word community lightly.

The valley was always a get off my lawn community, it just grew into a bigger get off my lawn community

I think the contrarian nature of this state mostly serves it well actually, but not always for sure.

VGK is a good pick. If the Coyotes were my number one VGK is the place I'd land. Not the biggest fan of Vegas (tourist trap Hell on the Strip) but the games there are amazing.

It's essentially the only other place I'd live.. I need sun and desert/palm trees in my life. It's pretty much the same weather as Phoenix, geographically the closest team, has an owner and arena that I don't need to worry about. Plus they REALLY piss off Canada/Hockey purists lol

Their fanbase has also been INCREDIBLY welcoming to AZ Coyotes refugees on reddit and HF. Good people

Seems like Ishbia is struggling as an owner himself with the Suns. This is in line with a poster in this thread who has connections to the Suns said about him awhile back

Yea, not surprised by this. May not be credible, but him not stepping in to buy the Yotes really screamed "Shit for Brains" to me.

OMG absolutely calling him Ish for Brains from now on.

That's a great video. I remember when PHNX started RT said something like is Leah "special"? Implying something. He didn't like her. She put this video together. It's sad
we didn't get more of them.
I think I just attacked her qualifications but within the first week or two admitted she was a good referee and managed the two old goats well. I think I’ve been a Leah defender since pretty early. But yeah my first impression was confusion. Who is this person? Why would they pick her? Was her name drawn from a hat?

And now look. There’s no doubt she did a great job.

Leah is my favorite of the three. I wish she was contactable other than Twitter or the pay Discord so I could tell her what s great job she's done.

To be fair even if he wanted to buy the team, I doubt AM would sell to him unless he got 1.2-1.3 bill that Ryan Smith threw around. Even he’s smart enough not to overpay to that degree sad to say.

Buying might have been fiscally irresponsible, but not buying I think will prove to be shortsighted. Smith is a competitor of Ishbia's, and the team is still an asset, one that Ish let Smith just waltz right in, take and ship off. Now Smith is going to take that asset, leverage them, and get a new barn built with it.

Meanwhile, Ish is going to be stuck with a degrading building that he still doesn't own and the prospect of his own club's stability in the Valley possibly facing questions down the road when that lease is up. It would have been a lot easier to get a new building with two pro teams instead of one.

Water under the bridge. Pure speculation on my part of course. But given the shit with Chase Field and the DBacks, and just the overall climate of what the Arizona population has shown us in the last couple years regarding not having an appetite for any new stadiums (or even renovations), I wouldn't be surprised if in 15 years, the Cardinals are the only pro team in town.

All this said, I pray I'm wrong. Shit, funny thought - watch the Suns move to Glendale one day lol

I'd be extremely surprised. The Suns have been part of this Valley longer than most of the people on this board have been alive. They're not going anywhere. The Cardinals would leave before the Suns would.

But they're in for a world of hurt over the long term. Ishbia screwed up the future of the franchise trying to be Jerry Colangelo and batting a miracle they're going to be bottom feeders for a long while once the super team is dissolved.

Looking ahead, presuming AM wins the land auction, are there any further regulatory hurdles? For argument’s sake, I’m taking him at his word that the building goes up w or w/o the amusement park district.
