If Dickinson is the Seattle pick, I'd still welcome Cogs back around this price point. I don't expect Cogliano would get any multi year offers, nor a much higher AAV. If he's holding out for that, think he'll be waiting a while.

Think FirstRow's math is off by the way, Cogs is more then 8 months younger. Edit: birthdays are 1 year 3 months and 27 days apart.

Knock on wood but I don’t see Cogs back. Comeau is here for another season and a group of Faksa/Dickinson, Kivi, Dellandrea, Guri, a UFA along with kids and other lower paid AHLers should keep the Stars from having any reason to resign both of’em.

I don't know why this Comeau signing is this hotly discussed. The Stars needed to another forward that fullfill forward requirements of the expansion draft to not have to expose Pavelski and go into RFA contract negotiation with Dickinson early . They signed a known quantity to a close to vet minimum contract.

There's nothing wrong with this contract. It's cheap and Comeau was still better than most guys who played last season.

Thanks to the injuries there was legitimate argumet in some games that Comeau was the 4th/5th best forward on the active roster .

lol it was pretty bland until @David Castillo came in hot.

Cogliano is also a few years younger, so he could have been looking more in the 1.5-1.75 range or 2+ years. You never know.

Cogliano has a better reputation around the league. Thats the only reason he'd be getting more money. He's not that much younger . Comeau February 1986 , Cogs June 1987 .

Well i guess the 35+ thing makes a difference right now.

Yea they are much closer than I thought, for some reason I thought it was 2 yr age gap.

A cheap year of Comeau is fine, about the same as a cheap year of an AHL Dowling you could say.

We’ve got Coms, no need for Cogs!

I don’t know about this one . I think Managemant is a little too nice giving anymore than league minimum . Not gonna lose any sleep over it though . Maybe for what will likely be his final year , he will finally try sharpening his skates .

Nill wasn't going to insult him any more with the pay cut, and $1 Million sounds a lot better than $956,000 or whatever. That said, Jason Spezza set the bar by signing back with TOR for the minimum of $750,000, so maybe he could have got it. I suspect BC knew that he was the easiest option for Nill to sign, and used it as a bit of leverage, and Nill doesn't like to embarrass players he respects anyway.

And, as I mentioned, it might not even be a full year. As the year goes on, we can hope a youngster can come in and take over, and there is always the possibility of BC going to a playoff team at the TDL.

We often tend to over react.....it's what we do, but K18 has it right. Despite what some say, BC is neither the worst or best choice to fill the role of checking line winger. Even a championship team doesn't need the absolute best at every position, especially scoring potential from a 3/4 line winger.

Yup Comeau is Bones’ natural viagra
Comeau will play for sure, but it is worth noting his usage didn’t see much of a jump despite having no Seguin, Radulov, or Kiviranta for most of the season. Bowness did play young offensive guys like Gurianov and Robertson more than Comeau. Even Dickinson played more than Comeau.

Bowness keeps Comeau in a third liner role.

He’s not going to get buried though . He will play every game he’s healthy .

That's really the thing about this signing that is a bummer. For the love of god, please don't let him be on the ice for 2nd line minutes. The value is fine, the usage over a season is going to melt my brain if its anything like this season.

For the record, I would have rather explored free agency before signing Comeau, but if you want to make the argument that he's there to cover an expansion draft spot, I'd rather sign Dowling to a 2-way contract and then waive him at the beginning of the season to be filler on the Texas Stars. That way you can still explore free agency, and frankly, I bet Comeau is still there for this price if you still want him. That's a lot of speculation on my part, but I doubt Dowling has much room to negotiate if the Stars wanted to do that.

Kinda surprised Nill didn't give him two years- I think that bodes well for Cogliano moving on.

Perhaps
it's a case of the devil you know being better than the one you don't? Yes, there are several similar wingers out there, but at the very least, you have to teach them the system, which could take a quarter season, there may or may not be chemistry with the linemates you want to put them with, and they may not be as good in the locker room, or too injury prone, etc.

Fans always seem to think the grass is greener somewhere else. It's just not always the case.

We had to sign another forward for the expansion draft. We probably look at other options if not for that.

The expansion draft is in less than one month. You're not getting anyone signed that fullfills the requirements who hasn't been with the team right now. Stars needed to sign another forward unless they wanted to expose Pavelski.

True enough, but even as a hockey deal, BC was probably a comfortable option for Nill. We might still go get Comeau for 5X the $$$, or some other guy other fan bases want to shoot to the moon for about 2X. Besides the hockey factors above, BC provides great value to Nill when considering the salary cap, which almost any other UFA forward would have a hard time matching.
