So, interesting thought exercise.

Buffalo likely doesn't want to buyout Skinner due to the structure of his buyout, a poison pill in 2026-27 that causes the buyout cost to be 6.44M in dead cap.

Toronto doesn't want to buyout Tavares because they get no savings, essentially.

A thought:

Buffalo retains 20% on Skinner, trades him to Toronto for Tavares and both teams buy the players out.

Buffalo will be eating, most of their dead cap this year with 20% of Skinners buyout being on their books.

Toronto will be a ton of immediate relief this year, but have to take 80% of Skinners buyout hit over 6 years.

They money mostly evens out, with Buffalo paying 8M to Tavares next year and 3M of the 15M Skinner buyout.

Toronto is paying 12M of the 15M Skinner buyout.

There are no NMC concerns because both players are just getting bought out.

That's not how NMC's work...

I assume Toronto doesn’t care much about the real money costs and does care a lot about have dead cap space until 2029-30, so no.

You have to trade someone to have another team buy them out so...

And there’s that…

I don’t understand this for Toronto.
Unless there’s ’all in’ signings / trades for this coming year ? Which there isn’t. Toronto will not be taking on extended dead cap. Heck, they’d tell Tavares to retire and give him Shanny’s job before doing this. lol

The Leafs aren't interested in Fing over our cap for 6 years. We made our bed with Tavares and now we'll lie in it, but we'd prefer Tavares to screw our cap hard for one year, where we can still realistically put together a really good team anyways, instead of screwing ourselves mildly for 6 years.

Heck, our young goalie makes less than 1 million on the cap next year. We can sign a 2 or 2.5 million guy like Nedeljkovic to battle him for starts and our goaltending duo will cost 3.5 total. That's 3 or more million cheaper than a lot of teams. That's like two thirds of the money Tavares is overpaid by saved right there. Next summer the problem totally disappears.

Tavares in an 'off' season would have led Buffalo in Points and goals (tied) ...Tavares is not a buyout candidate, its a 1 year tighten the belt situation, or if he waives, is dealt.
