Its been well known that the two sides basically agreed to the framework of an extension, but Brindy wanted to make sure his assistants were taken care of before he extended, and they decided to table the finalization of the details until after the playoff run when they could focus on it.
As for the contract being less, Dundon has repeatedly said he will spend money for anything that benefits the team on the ice, and has routinely backed that up by spending to the cap, overhauling the training facilities, and essentially giving Brindy a blank check to do what he wants with the coaches. There has been no worries about an extension, and from things that have leaked today, it sounds like Brindy's agent might have gone rogue a bit over the past 24 hours, and did it on behalf of his other clients, and not Brindy.
