Posted about this one in the Sony Marvel Universe thread a while ago. The release date and actors have been known for a while...will it work? Who knows. Both Venom movies can be considered a success but the Morbius one not so much I think though some argue financially it is somewhat of a success given it only had a $75M budget and has made $69M domestic and $87M other markets for a total of abut $156M.

Still a fraction of Venom ($100M budget) $856M worldwide ($213M domestic) and Venom 2 which stayed stable with domestic box office ($213M) but I guess probably covid issues caused a drop in other markets as the world wide sales was about $288M for a total of $502M on a $110M budget. Personally Morbius is the first MCU or Sony Marvel movie (I include both Venom movies and Into the Siderverse) I have not seen in theaters.

Ohh and the kinda weird part as there is some crossover with the MCU is that Kraven is being played by one and done in the MCU Aaron Taylor-Johnson who was of course Pietro aka Quicksilver in Age of Ulton.

And this one will also create another sort of casting issue with the MCU as Russel Crowe is in Kraven and he is supposed to be Zeus in Thor Love and Thunder. No word that I have heard of who he will be in the Kraven movie and I doubt it's Zeus.

Calypso will be in this, another Spider-Man foe and a Voodoo priestess who has mind control in the comics along with her potions etc.

Dmitri Smerdyakov aka the Chameleon in the comics is also supposed to appear and is another foe to Spider-Man among others.

And a weirder one is the Cosmic being the Stranger who is part of the Elders of the universe. Which in the comics at least is related to the Collector and the Grandmaster.

zero need for this.

This is the part that I'm trying to figure out. Why do we need this story to be told as a stand-alone? Even in comic format, where they had 60 years freedom to run a stand-alone limited series just for the hell of it, he never merited one.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's really cool that this universe is getting fleshed out so deeply. But it's getting a bit like Star Wars having a spinoff movie for Lobot.

As someone who think the Captain Underpants movie is one of, if not the best film adaptions of a children's book series ever, I’ve stopped trying to predict what will or won’t make a good movie

I learned my lesson with Ant Man, and before that with Guardians.

That being said, those movies were very very heavily carried by the charisma of Paul Rudd and Chris Pratt, which fed into that quippy MCU style. It was a perfect marriage of casting and screenplay. That's a really high bar and I have major doubts that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is going to get there with this screenwriting team.

This does indeed feel like yet another Morbius/Venom type movie which you can afford to miss. The one time I've really been impressed by Sony's approach was Spider-Verse, and that was also the one time they took a unique approach rather than trying to drum up a grittier, shittier MCU.

Not only that but Spider-Verse had a well known, established team that has a long track record of success in their medium.

What do these Sony Non-Spidey films have?

It's certainly an unconventional strategy to build up a Spider-Man universe without actually having a Spider-Man.

I'm curious what, if any, attempts there will be to connect to the MCU going forward. Wouldn't be shocked if the connections in No Way Home and Morbius are just table setting and both series move off in their own directions. It actually feels like a trade. "We'll give you this for your movie, but you have to give us that for our movie."

As much as fans probably want these properties to continue to criss-cross I feel like both are at a point where they can move forward without the other. MCU with Holland (presumably) and Sony either luring Garfield back or recasting.

I know the Disney-Sony business ties will always be there but with different creative teams at different companies I gotta believe there's going to be a desire to do their own things and not be too beholden (other than maybe some cameos/easter eggs) to what another company/team is doing.

It goes back to someone at Sony wanting to piggyback on the MCU success and does not want to give up the idea of a Sinister Six movie down the line. Or at least I think that's the deal with Sony continuing to make these.

I have a feeling that if the quality of these Sony movies continue to be hot trash the MCU will include as little as possible beyond Spidey himself.
Well it's become pretty apparent that unless Kevin Feige/Marvel Studios are involved in the live action stuff, it has a high chance of failing.

I actually love the idea of a Sinister Six movie. "Revenge of the Sinister Six" was a really fun plotline that came out not too long after the original Infinity War, and would make a lot of sense as the basis for a series of Spidey movies (i.e., the Avengers model of doing a few standalones and then an ensemble movie or two).

What I don't trust about this, is that it's Sony. They seem far more likely to **** this up than to get it right, and that sets the whole thing in a DC-like direction where you cringe when they announce a new effort.

These guys were decent in the spider man 90s cartoon but I really don't have interest in seeing them in movies

Venom is more well known to non Spidey enthusiasts vs Morbius and Kraven.
But agreed that Sony is trying to piggy back off their mcu relationship to make a buck. But, unless they have a cohesive strategy in place I do believe it will not be successful.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTT?

First I'm hearing of this......love Kraven. Movie needs to be rated R though
That whole damn universe needs to be rated R. Really not sure why they wouldn’t. Not only are they using naturally gritty and graphic characters, but it would make them stand out from the MCU. Seems like a huge mistake, I’m sure both Venoms and Morbius would all be quite a bit better with an R rating

I enjoyed the Venom movies but without an R rating they were just kind of blah.

Haven't seen Morbius yet, and probably won't until it's free on TV.

But yeah, some characters NEED the R rating.

The ones you mentioned....plus Punisher, Ghost Rider.

Even Moon Knight should have been rated R.

When Disney made a mega franchise out of one of its theme park rides, I stopped questioning the source of inspiration for these things.

You never know when a creative team can mine gold from something that looks destined to fail. If word of mouth is good, I'll watch it. If it's bad, I don't.

Not sure if that's the Kraven I've seen in comics... Also, Kris Carr has said on both Kristian Harloff's and John Campea's shows recently that she knows some people who are working on the movie and they're saying "it's a mess".
