Maybe Sid should have to pay Methot's salary until Methot can come back? And his salary can count against Pittsburgh's cap instead of Ottawa's?

... not a very elegant way of dealing with it. Sid should just eat a big suspension for maiming someone and be done with it, but obviously Sid could take a guy's eye out with a tomahawk on the ice and the league wouldn't even slap him on the wrist, so *shrug*

If Sid issues a public statement saying he did not mean to hurt Methot and wish him a speedy recovery that's would have been it.

it's pretty common in the NHL for a guy to reach out to someone when there is an accidental injury caused

Is this a real thing? Has anyone heard anything? Or are basically saying he's done for the season and will be a Golden Knight next year.

No, and it's probably unlikely, but I has my finger crushed and partially severed from the tip to the first knuckle and it took well over a month to get partial mobility without pain, months to regain full mobility of the finger.

The speculation is entirely based on him potentially getting drafted by Vegas.

In isolation the slash may not look to bad, but a horrific outcome. But it comes hard on the heels of the dirty from behind crotch whack, and in that game slewfooting and a sneaky taking out the skates of Anderson and it all stinks. And it builds on Sid's sneaky dirty shots over the years, he has a body of work that he is NOT held accountable for. Now he has ended an important player's season but that' OK!

It seems like amputating the end of the pinky finger might be the best thing to do. If Methot plans on playing hockey this season and wants less pain.

It is not really important to have your full pinky finger. However actually repairing that mess of a finger will take a month and maybe many months.

Even if he was not a pro athlete that finger could easily be toast and best amputated partially. If it was a different finger then a pinky it would make sense to attempt to save it...

Ronnie Lott #42
1986
Aug. 2: In April, doctors looked at the badly damaged finger on Ronnie Lott's left hand and gave him two choices. They could operate, graft a bone from the wrist, insert a pin and have him wear a cast for the next eight weeks. Or they could amputate just above the first joint. Lott made what coaches like to call "the football decision." He told them to cut off the end of his finger. It was a simple procedure. He held out his hand, they numbed it and snipped off the finger tip and put his hand in a cast. After three weeks he went back to have the cast removed. The doctor took off the last dressing. "What do you think?" he asked. Lott couldn't answer. He was staring at a stub. Instead of a fingernail there was only a whitish, rounded stump. "The ugliest thing I've ever seen," Lott says. "I was trying to laugh it off, but I felt sick. I tried to stand up, but I broke into a cold sweat. It was just a total shock. I thought, 'Oh, man, I should have had the pin put in.' " Lott has had worse injuries, but emotionally this one was different. It made him feel that football was biting off bits and pieces of him, of everyone who plays. And no one seems to care. "We are losing the compassionate side of sports," he says. "We're becoming gladiators. If I ever become a coach, I hope I never lose sight of the fact that players are people. They feel, they have emotions. I could have all of Eddie DeBartolo's corporations and it isn't going to buy me a new finger. It has given me a new perspective on life."

Insanity.

Being in the game and 'sucking it up' as a pro athlete is important...but no way in hell is it important enough to have a piece of your body cut off just so you can get back into the game faster.

I'd have a hard time being the fan of a team that puts those kinds of pressures on a player. It's one thing to try an play through a sprained ankle, or to freeze a finger....but not that.

I haven't seen much on his injury.

Is the finger actually broken or did the skin from the tip of his finger break and split due to impact?

Ive hit my thumb very hard and had the skin split making it look like this huge bleedy gash on my thumb but I just needed a week or so for the skin to attach and heel.

I haven't seen any injury reports other then stuff like "methot is out with that obvious finger injury" but never hear details.

Broken off at the last knuckle, then reattached, now wait a few weeks to see if takes, if not they cut it off permanently.

Yeah, I can't imagine a scenario where they would amputate. Mine was much more severe, 8,000 pounds, and they put it back together, just looks funny and took significant time.

Serious question. Is it normal now? Or still kinda screwed up?

This is officially what happened? I have not seen anything from the team on his injury.

We should spread a rumour that his career is in jeopardy so that Vegas doesn't pick him.

If I were them, I'd take shootout specialist Tom Pyatt, who was once described by our GM as replaceable.

Wow - I had never seen that quote from Lott before. The public thought he had basically chewed it off and that it never affected him - this is the first time I saw that he had a very human reaction to what happened to him. We often forget that these guys are people, not just gladiators there for our entertainment...

Speculation. Sens can only protect 3 defenders. Phaneuf has a NMC so he has to be protected and is arguably more valuable to the Sens than Methot. This has lead people to speculate for the last few months that the Sens will protect Karl, Ceci, Phaneuf which would leave Methot as the Senators most desirable unprotected player.

Nobody really knows who Vegas is taking. Garrioch had at one point pushed the idea that Vegas really likes Chris Wideman. Still, it isn't unfair to speculate that there is a very good chance Methot will have to be exposed and if exposed he might be a front runner to be selected by Vegas.

Yeah but what if he really likes tea parties?

If Vegas is undecided between Wideman and Methot, I'd be willing to toss them a pick in order for them to pick Wideman.
