Seems like an overpayment? A third round pick just to dump 1.45M for 1 season? What can you realistically do with that money? Sign a 4th line guy?

a third to get rid of Pearson, save capspace, and get a quality backup seems like solid value for the Canucks and for the habs they had an extra goalie and got a pick out of it and who knows if Pearson plays well enough they could potentially flip him at the TDL.
Potentially get 2 3rd round picks for DeSmith isn't too shabby.

I like the trade for Vancouver.

DeSmith is a much more established goaltender than either Silovs or Martin and you would have to think that Rutherford and Allvin are comfortable on acquiring him after having him in Pittsburgh.

He also has experience being the starter for stretches should Demko get injured at any point. That difference between 2-4 points from your backup goalie might be difference between making the playoffs or not.

It’s an insurance policy that is worth the 3rd round pick IMO.

Tanner Pearson EPITOMISES Jim Benning as a GM

Decides to keep him at the deadline despite being eliminated from the playoffs
decides to extend him for no reason in a massive cap crunch and his two most important players still not under contract
Then the topper
He gives him a NTC clause for the first 2 years of the deal and a signing bonus in the 3rd year.

Its also just a 3rd round pick. Spencer Martin was awful last season and Vancouver was in a pretty precarious cap situation, they're not trying to make another move, they're trying to get cap relief.

Jim Benning's finest hour, along side the Garland/OEL trade. Garland is decent but OEL was washed when he got here.

Jim Benning hasn't been heard off when he got canned, he shouldn't be near an NHL GM room again.

Its bizarre how such a uncompetitive team has had such massive cap problems.

Benning completely f*cked them on the Garland/OEL deal.

But Rutherford/Allvin doubling down on Boeser was also dumb.
The JT Miller contract is absolute insanity for a team in their position too. In theory a core of Pettersson, Hughes and Demko should be enough to build a champion around but ownership/management is too incompetent to even get them into the playoffs.

Yeah at least Miller puts up enough offense to justify an 8mil aav.

Boeser getting 6.7m when he has such injury problems, on a team that had real cap problems, never made much sense to me.
