New York Rangers Franchise Mode
2nd Half 2023-2024 NHL Season
CHYTILS HATTRICK LIFTS RANGERS OVER PENS
Jan. 24th, 2024Filip Chytil bet on himself by signing a 1-year contract, and he looks poised to make the Rangers and GM Brant King pay.
Chytils heroics helped the Rangers win a key divisional matchup over the Pens, the only team ahead of them in the Metropolitan Division.
Kaapo Kakko and Mika Zibanejad each had 1 goal and 1 assist, while Panarin and Lafreniere also added 2 assists each.
Igor Shesterkin stopped 28/31 (.903 SV%) for the win.
The Rangers are now 30-14-1 and trail the Pens by 2 points for the division lead.
GOODROWS PAIR HELPS RANGERS OVER STARSFeb. 20th, 2024Goodrow started slow, but is starting to find last seasons form that saw him have a breakout season during his 2nd year in New York.
Cole Schwindt reclaimed his spot on the 3rd line as Kristian Vesalainen slotted down onto the 4th, and is has proved to be a good change for 1st year coach Myles Smith as the swap has sparked the offense on the 3rd line.
Goodrows goals brought him up to 15 on the season, within striking distance of the 20-goal plateau again with nearly 30 games remaining.
Igor Shesterkin stopped 32 for a .969 SV% and 1st star.
RANGERS TOP LIGHTNING WITH TRADE DEADLINE ACQUISITIONS IN LINEUPMarch 9th, 2024The New York Rangers pushed their chips to the middle at the Trade Deadline, acquiring defesneman Marco Scandella from the flailing Edmonton Oilers for a 2nd round pick in this years entry Draft an prospect Maxim Barbashev, and acquiring 3-time Stanley Cup Champion Jonathan Toews from the San Jose Sharks for a 2025 3rd round pick, Jaret Anderson-Dolan, and defensive prospect Ty Emberson.
The new look Rangers, with Toews centering the 3rd line between Goodrow and Trocheck, outlasted the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in overtime in their first game with the new additions.
Marco Scandella played 22 minutes on the top pair with Adam Fox, with a +1 rating. Jonathan Toews played 15:04 of uneventful hockey, which is not an issue for him in his role with the team.
The Rangers now sit 40-21-3 and have leapfrogged the Penguins for 1st in the Metro.
RANGERS CLINCH PLAYOFFS WITH WIN OVER DETROIT
April 8th, 2024While the record has not been perfect post-deadline, as players fit into new lines and systems and the season comes to a final stretch, the Rangers have officially clinched their spot in the Playoffs, returning after missing the postseason last year.
First year coach Myles Smith has done great work and will almost assuredly get a nomination for the Jack Adams, seemingly fixing what ailed the Rangers and perplexed many last season.
The offense has slowed post deadline, but the Rangers are not worried about this as it was expected down the stretch and will help them adjust to the type of hockey required to win Playoff games.
New York sits 1st in the Metro and tied for 2nd in the league with 98 points off a 47-28-4 record.
RANGERS CLINCH 1ST IN METRO WITH SEASON ENDING WIN OVER LEAFSApril 13th, 2024The Rangers took fate into their own hands, winning their final game to clinch the top spot in the Metropolitan Division and Home ice advantage for atleast the first 2 rounds of the Playoffs.
Artemi Panarin scored twice (3 points), while Kakko and Zibanejad also scored in the 4-1 victory.
Igor Shesterkin made 21 saves (.955 SV%) for his 38th win of the season.

Igor Shesterkin has been unable to find his Vezina winning performance form from 2021-2022, but he set a new career high in wins with 38, and got the job done to secure the Rangers 1st in the Metro and obviously a playoff birth.
Louis Domingue was easily the best backup of the season, but Dylan Garand had his best game in a callup of the second half, and seems poised to earn the role as early as next season.
DiPietro was untradeable at the deadline, and will backup Garand in the Calder Cup Playoffs for Hartford.

Adam Fox was stellar, as were Jacob Trouba and K'Andre Miller when healthy. No doubt the Rangers would like to see more offense from Miller and Trouba, but their defensive metrics were stout.
Michal Kempny became a cap casualty and was waived followed the addition of Marco Scandella, viewed as an upgrade.
Braden Schneider struggled in his 2nd full NHL season, which would be called a sophomore slump, but a large part can probably be attributed to his revolving door of D partners.
Zac Jones is still injured, and won't be playing in the Playoffs.

The Rangers offense slowed, and Zibanejad and Panarin were not able to maintain their pace. It is the 2nd consecutive disappointing season for the Rangers two main offensive stars, just this season they were covered by massive leaps forward for the trio of youngsters Filip Chytil, Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafreniere.
Vincent Trocheck has expressed displeasure with his dimished ice time and 3rd line assignemnt despite posting 28 goals, and that will be a concern come the offseason.
Barclay Goodrow repeated as 20-goal and 40-point version of himself, a welcome sign to show that last year was not a one off and he's found another gear.
Jon Toews fit in nicely, playing at nearly half a point per game pace in contrast to his 23 points in 64 games before being acquired.
Chris Kreiders goal scoring has never reached the 52-goal pace it was for one season, but 16 goals is not nearly enough from him, even if he posted 62 points.

2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs and 2027 NHL Offseason
1ST ROUND VS DETROIT RED WINGS
2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs
The Rangers draw the Red Wings in the first round as the 2WC team that crosses over to the Metro bracket.
The Rangers cannot take the Wings likely, as they boast 55-goal scorer Auston Matthews and 90-point scorer Lucas Raymond as their star forwards. Captain Dylan Larkin can still play, while 2022 8th overall pick Marco Kasper is a playmaking threat. They also have one of the top D in the league in Moritz Seider.
In nets, Sebastian Cossa struggled this season with an .898 SV%, but still managed 33 wins for the Wings.
The Rangers will need to shut down the Wings offense and ensure Cossa doesn't get on a roll, as if he finds his game, he's one of the top goaltenders in the NHL.

1ST ROUND RECAP
2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs
The Wings fought for their lives to avoid the sweep, but ultimately the Rangers would finish them off in the next game on home ice in the 5th and final game of the Red Wings 2027 Playoffs.
Kaapo Kakko, who missed Game 1, returned with vengeance recording 6 points in the remaining 4 games to lead New York in scoring.
From the pre-series checklist, the Rangers held Matthews and Raymond to just 2 goals each in the 5 game series, more than enough to slow the Wings' attack. They also managed to chase Cossa in both Game 2 and 5. The netminder had a .873 SV% in the series.
Contrast that to Igor Shesterkins .926 SV%, which includes the blip from Game 4, and it paints a picture of why the Rangers won. Shesterkins numbers if not for Game 4 would have been even more dominant.
The Rangers were actually the team making the Islanders wait for their 2nd round opponent after they swept Pittsburgh in the 1st round.
2ND ROUND VS NEW YORK ISLANDERS
2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs
They battled back and forth all season for the top spot in the Metro before the Rangers finally pulled ahead with a stellar post-deadline record.
The Islanders will prove to be a tough out for the Rangers, as the Rangers won the season series 3-1, but needed to shootout for 2 of those wins. Shootouts cease to exist come playoff time, so this could be an entertaining series of overtime hockey, which can go either way.
The Islanders, led by Connor Bedard, Mat Barzal, Oliver Wahlstrom and supplemented by the return of John Tavares in his twilight days pose a significant threat on offense to the Rangers, who will need to be extremely sharp in the Dzone.
Anthony Stolarz, perhaps seen as the weakness of this team in the Regular season, put together a solid series against Pittsburgh with a .928 SV%. This contrasts his .909 Regular season SV% sharply. It was Stolarz' first as a starter at age 33 after being a backup his entire career.
The Rangers could use the awakening of Alexis Lafreniere, who had just 2 points in the 1st round. That would be the X factor is this series.

2ND ROUND RECAP
2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs
The New York Rangers head to the Eastern Conference Finals for the 4th year in a row, cementing pure dominance in the Metropolitan Division.
This year seems like it carries more weight, as Barclay Goodrow is a pending UFA who has likely priced his way out of NY. If he has, he left one hell of a last gift, scoring the Game 7 overtime winner to move the Rangers past the Islanders and onto the next round.
After falling down 3-2, the Rangers utterly dominated Game 6 before needing Goodrow's heroics to overcome a scoring affair in Game 7. Like predicted at the start, it was a thrilling series, and the Islanders nearly too out the 3-time defending Eastern Conference champs.
Brennan Othmann is now 2nd in playoff goal scoring with 7, and leads the Rangers in goal and points with 7 and 10 through 12 games.
Igor Shesterkin had a so-so series, with some highlights (Games 2&3) and some scary moments (Games 1, 5 & 7).
EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS VS BOSTON BRUINS
2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs
The Rangers and Bruins face off in the Playoffs for the 1st time since the shortened 2012-2013 season in which Boston thumped the Rangers in 5 ending John Tortorella's HC tenure in NY.
The Bruins finished 42-30-10, 2nd in the Atlantic. They sent the Sabres easily packing in 5 games in the 1st round, and narrowly beat the Division-leading Panthers in a hard fought 7 game series.
They are led offensively by Pastrnak and Marchand, as well as deadline additions Andre Burakovsky and Drake Batherson.
In nets, Jeremy Swayman and Sergei Bobrovsky have each won 4 games, with Swayman posting the more daunting .948 SV% prior to his injury in Game 1 of the 2nd round. Bobrovskys .901 SV% after taking over for the 2nd round does not inspire confidence. Connor Ingram is the backup for now.
New York defeated Boston twice in the Regular season by scores of 6-3 and 4-2, while losing to them in the 3rd game of the season 2-1.

2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Everyone thought it was over.
After taking a 3-0 series lead, the Rangers let it slip away one embarrassing loss at a time. First was the 8-2 rout. Then the 5-2 loss. Following by blowing a 3-1 lead in the 3rd to lose 5-4 as the Bruins forced a Game 7 in New York.
In shockingly what was only the 2nd most dominant win the Rangers have had this postseason, outshooting the Bruins 45-17, the Rangers took game 7 with relative ease to shock the hockey world and return to the Cup Finals for the 3rd 4th consecutive season.
Mika Zibanejad has continued his 2nd half dominance as he's now up to 19 points (8-11--19) in 19 games, 5 points ahead of 2nd place Brennan Othmann (10-4--14).
Lafreniere has put up 10 points over the last 14 games (two 7-game series).
STANLEY CUP FINALS VS OILERS
2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs
The New York Rangers will either leave this series Stanley Cup Champions for the 2nd time in 4 years, or they will leave the losers of 3 consecutive Finals and 3 years removed from their Cup victory.
They face an intriguing opponent in the Edmonton Oilers. This is the Oilers 1st Finals appearance of the McDavid/Draisaitl era, a shockingly long stretch without making it here with 2 of the top players in the game.
That should scare the Rangers, as those two will be hungry and determined to make this count.
No team has taken the Oilers past 5 games. They have closed out the Avalanche, Predators and Golden Knights in that order.
How did they do it? Offense. McDavid's 21 points lead the Playoffs, while Draisaitls 20 is 2nd. They have 5 other players with over 10 points.
They also have old foe Ilya Sorokin in nets. The former Islander has a .918 SV% in these playoffs, which is superior to Shesterkins after his poor series against the Bruins as he now owns a subpar .903 SV%.
The key for the Rangers will be the play of Shesterkin and the defense. If they can slow McDavid & Draisaitl, the Rangers have a shot. If not, they certainly need their offense firing to outscore the Oilers.

STANLEY CUP FINALS RECAP
2027 Stanley Cup Playoffs
The New York Rangers have won their 2nd Stanley Cup in 4 years, after appearing in their 4th Stanley Cup Finals in 4 years.
They are currently a powerhouse, a juggernaut, a force, and one more Stanley Cup would cement their legacy as a dynasty, but no need to get ahead of ourselves.
Mika Zibanejad took home the Conn Smythe after a point-per-game playoff run with 26 points (10 goals) in 26 games.
Igor Shesterkin came up with a big game in Game 7 when the Rangers needed him after an uneven Playoff run that followed a Vezina worthy season.
Brennan Othmann had a HUGE playoff run with 15 goals in 26 games, while Artemi Panarin and Filip Chytil both scored over 20 points.
Torey Krug continued fitting in well with the Rangers, with 17 points (4-13--17) in 26 playoff games, matching Adam Fox's total (3-14--17).
LAFRENIERE WINS TED LINDSAY, SHESTERKIN WINS 2ND VEZINA AT NHL AWARDS2027 NHL Awards, Las VegasIn a great night for Rangers players, Alexis Lafreniere took home the Ted Lindsay, voted as the most outstanding player in the NHL by members of the NHLPA.
Igor Shesterkin won his 2nd Vezina Trophy after his first solid Regular Season since he last won the award in 2021-2022.
These two awards join the Rangers hardware from last season of their 4th consecutive Prince of Wales Trophy and 2nd Stanley Cup in 4 years (6th all time).
MARC-ANDRE FLEURY ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM NHL
2027 NHL Offseason
New York Rangers backup goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has retired from the NHL. A likely future HOFer, with 651 wins good for 2nd all time and 4 Stanley Cups (last one this season with NYR), won 21 games in his final NHL season in New York.
He started in Pittsburgh, and followed by his expansion pick to Vegas, trade to Chicago and subsequent trade to Minnesota, he also played for the Devils, Islanders, Oilers, and finally Rangers.
Other retirees are fellow Penguins alumni Evgeni Malkin, Alex Ovechkin, Steven Stamkos, Joe Pavelski, Phil Kessel, Jamie Benn, Paul Statsny, Brent Burns, David Perron and Max Pacioretty.
OTHMANN, GOODROW, ANDERSSON RE-SIGN WITH RANGERS
2027 NHL Offseason
The New York Rangers locked up 3 key Free Agents during the re-sign phase.
RFA forward Brennan Othmann, coming off a 1-year deal worth $2.750M, had a monster playoffs leading the Rangers in goals as they won the Stanley Cup. He also had his 2nd consecutive 20-goal season of his young 3 season career.
The 24-year old forward signed on for 3-years at a total of $18.0M ($6.0M AAV).
Goodrow, who has enjoyed much success in New York and now upped his cup total to 4, resigned with the Rangers at a discounted $2.750M on a 1-year deal. The 34-year old likely could have made more money on the market, but he has found a solid niche on the 3rd line playing all 3 positions for the Rangers and having fit in nicely to the system of head coach Myles Smith.
Andersson, who has been a solid 3rd pairing defender for the Rangers since joining them 2 offseasons ago, gets the longest deal of the three. a 4-year term with an AAV of $2.5M ($10.0M total $ value) was enough to get the pending UFA to sign on the dotted line prior to heading to Free Agency.
GRUBAUER, STANLEY JOIN RANGERS DURING FREE AGENCY2027 NHL OffseasonThe Rangers filled the void left my Marc-Andre Fleury by signing veteran backstop Philipp Grubauer to a 1-year $800K deal to be Igor Shesterkins new backup.
The 35-year old last started for Seattle in 2022/2023, playing 50 games, going 25-19-4 with a .909 SV% and 3 shutouts. Since then, he's backed up for 2 full seasons, while playing 2 full seasons in the AHL as well.
The also signed defesneman Logan Stanley to a 2-year pact carrying a $1.5M AAV.
Stanley, a former 1st round pick in 2016, has 50 points in 335 career games. The 6'7" defenseman played for the Blackhawks last season, appearing in all 82 games while scoring 4 goals and 4 assists. He was -23, which the Rangers aren't worried about as the Hawks were putrid. GM Brant King is hoping he can refine his game on a much better Rangers squad.
These moves leave the Rangers with just over $2M in cap space, which they will likely carry into the season as a buffer for any in season moves they decide to make.
I never play any games! I slow sim every game to pick which ones I focus in on for writeups. In any significant regualr season/playoff games I go further and watch CPU vs CPU play as opposed to just slow simming to be able to give any extra info possible when doing writeups.Congrats on the win (and all the postseason success really)
....out of curiosity, do you sim most games or play some? (I'm assuming mostly sim, given how fast you're powering through seasons)
