If the veterans on this board are confused with the Tarasenko situation just imagine what I am thinking.. I'm just as lost as a Christmas Turkey.

It’s been a bit confusing because of how it played out in public, but it looks like:

- Tarasenko got some offers which were very low and very short. Canes were one of those. So was Ottawa, but the Sens can’t do anything cap-wise until the DeBrincat trade situation gets un-stuck.

- The Carolina offer got leaked, which got everyone excited that it was about to happen. But the leak came with a “things aren’t quite settled yet” disclaimer… maybe because Ottawa was still

- Tarasenko didn’t like what he was seeing, so he abruptly fired his agent and replaced him. All bets were off.

- Now the new agents are going back around to re-start negotiations at square one.

- Current belief is that Ottawa is still the front runner, and that they are offering much bigger $$$ than the Canes did.

It's starting to feel also like Tank just doesn't want to play for Carolina.

A while back we tried getting him and no dice.

Now when his best friend just recently signed with us, and we're still one of the top cup contenders, and he still doesn't want to play for us.

I'm not saying the contract offer from Carolina isn't the issue (or other teams for that matter; I doubt we're alone), but it's starting to look like things aren't ever gonna work out with him playing for the Hurricanes.

Hey at least I have the poor mans sauna during the summer! (my attic)
Here in Carolina, it's my screen porch.
I dunno, his take seems consistent with the known facts.

We were hearing scuttlebutt that the Canes were hashing out final details on a deal, but that doesn’t make sense in light of the agent being fired. Presumably Tank would not approve a deal and then turn around and fire his agent the next day. It makes sense that the deal was presented, the agency felt good enough about it to leak to a reporter, and Tank said “**** no, you’re fired” after seeing what they were working on.

Honestly this is all consistent with how the Canes operate too. We are well known for making offers — sometimes successfully — that insult the recipient. This is the organization that signed TDA for 1x$1M and then traded him when he had a good season. Do I think we would be in on a deal that would make a player so angry that he fires his agent? Yes I do.
Counter point: His previous agent was delaying in the hopes of getting a better offer. When Tank got wind of it, he said, f*** you, I'll get new people who will get a deal done.

This is called getting Klingberged. And the reality is, if this drags on through the Summer, the offers are only going to get worse.

That’s possible, but nobody is reporting anything like that. There were reports that the Canes deal was on the verge of being done. That is consistent with Canes and Sens being the two main bidders, and Sens being stuck because of the DeBrincat situation, therefore leaving the Canes as the only immediate option. That situation is also consistent with the fact that info was leaked (why keep it quiet at that point?) and the agent’s desire to go ahead and close with the Canes on such a small offer is consistent with Tarasenko wanting to get new representation and re-set.

When you put it like you did, gotta wonder if the leaking part of it was the primary reason why Tarasenko fired his agent. Some people take offence for that kind of thing, Anaheim GM re: the Kase trade attempt comes to my mind.

I’m kind of wondering about that too. It’s possible that a leak could have come from the Canes, but the agent* is usually the more likely source for that sort of thing. If Tarasenko wasn’t happy with the direction things were going, he may have been extra-bothered to see it showing up in the press before he had even agreed to it.

* not necessarily the actual agent, but someone from the agency

It’s also not unreasonable for a guy with two shoulder surgery’s to want the biggest guaranteed contract he can get. I doubt that is Carolina.

I imagine that the Tarasenko camp is expecting Ottawa to overpay for his services and that a championship isn't really a priority for him since he already has one in St. Louis. You know what, I'm not offended by that, and neither are the Canes FO, most likely. They'll just find another way to pivot like they always do.

Yes. I'm offended about getting blown off after it already was made public that he's to be a Cane, but other than that I've never been keen on getting Tarasenko even during the previous years. He used to form a magical pair with Jori Lehterä some nine years back, but seeing how the years got Lehterä already years ago, we are not talking about a promising yute.

would have to imagine it would be the agency, the Canes got burnt pretty bad on that one with the Faulk for Kase thing when that happened. A lot of their moves before that were as public as it gets. Saying the Hanifin/Lindholm negotiations had gone south publicly right before they're traded at the draft, basically forcing Skinner out of town with a public smear campaign headlined by Erik Cole of all people, etc.

It wasn't until Faulk basically said "I'm not the one being unreasonable here, here's where I'll go, Anaheim isn't on that list" that things changed. Since then they've been really quiet about their moves in public. Nobody saw Skjei coming, or Trocheck, or Burns. TDA people saw coming because "Dundon so cheap", but they also soft-leaked that one to Gold so that it might not turn into a publicity shit show (didn't work).

so if we keep skjei, do we run one of him or orlov on their offside? or do we bump skjei down to third pair with tda and run orlov with chatfield?

We probably test both to see how they do. If not in crunch times, Slavin can run in his off side
