What do you want from the Jackets' next GM?

We really have no idea, do we?

When Trotz was hired as GM the immediate speculation / joke was that he was going to fill the team with talentless grinders. I'd expect to see the same type of posting if Torts is hired here.
Six posts later, completely unironically...
Torts would just fill the team with no talent grinders.

Torts is the suggestion from the article

Wouldn't bet my job on this if I was JD, but honestly sounds about right based on previous hires he has sworn by. However, Torts has 2 more years left in philly and CBJ definitely wont be paying any royalties to get him out of that contract. How would that work?

People really had that view about Trotz? His Caps teams were far from grinders. Islanders rosters are what they are because of Lou.

And Trotz was loaded with experience? Hockey is hockey and if you surround yourself with the right people you can do a lot of good, thats why I referenced his connections. I dont know if Torts would be the best GM in the league or worst but same goes for the other candidates. They could just as easily do poorly or just as good
my personal opinion is that, given where the org is and the sheer amount of assets they have, this shouldn't be a "learn on the job" type hire.

if it's a rising star AGM getting to be the GM with an experienced president of hockey ops sitting over them, that's way different than hiring someone to run hockey ops who has never managed a roster or farm system before.

Yes and most of Torts' teams have had plenty of talent too.

Trotz had largely two-way defensive type rosters in Nashville and Long Island. And when Trotz was in Washington he reeled in their all-offensive ways and got them to buy in to a 200 ft game.

No idea how Tortorella would do as a first time GM.

My hunch is that they would hire him because of his skill in identifying good coaches (Brad Larsen aside) and trainers rather than experience scouting and evaluating player talent (like with Jarmo).

Torts is still more of a defensive specialist in my eyes than Trotz. Even managed to kinda fix Ristolainen somehow. Hurts the offensive star players, but manages to pull everything out of bad/average NHLers and makes goalies jobs easy.

No telling how that'd translate into GMing. Maybe he'd value understanding defensive structure more than the average guy, but it's not like that means he'd get 12 defensive 4th liners

I swear to G-d Almighty every day I discover more and more Jackets fans who apparently never once watched Artemi Panarin when he was wearing union blue.

I watched most of 18-19. By coincidence Kakko joined rangers in 19-20, so I happened start watching rangers when Panarin joined them and scored on 112 point pace. So yeah, the Panarin case only strengthened my opinions.

edit. might have actually been 17-18 when i watched a lot of cbj.. But any case, watched +50 and probably all playoff games

I listened to the CBJ mailbog with Bob McElligot from Monday and one of the questions was about what type of questions do you think are asked. Of course he indicated he had no idea (that's not a knock, he really doesn't know since he's not in the loop), however, he offered a few questions (logical for anyone that follows hockey in my opinion) that I really liked. The one that caught me the most and I hadn't really put thought about it in this regard was when asking about what a potential GM thinks about the roster and pipeline how would they handle it? What got my attention was, and in hindsight it makes a ton of sense, he "answered" by saying he would point out the redundancies on the roster and decide who you can't move and who you'd like to have but could be moved to remove the redundancy and create value elsewhere. For example, how many small, skilled wingers do we have and while they may all have upside or be good players, who do you keep and then if you can move others, do so to add, maybe, a powerforward with skill/grit, etc.

For me personally I have always been an optimist with our prospects and tend to value them higher than others, but thinking back to the earlier discussion (Pinelli, Dumais, Brindley, TFW, Whitelaw, Gaudreau, among others) we do have a lot of players of similar skill sets (I realize Brindley is not the same as Pineli, etc. - maybe he doesn't fit but I was looking more size, skill and in the group I would think Brindley would be the highest on the board). This would have to be viewed across the entire roster and pipeline but if you then ranked them, you would hope the new GM could identify who he thinks would be the best to keep short and long term and then use the other assets wisely to add to the team with a different skill set that compliments or enhances the roster. We can't keep them all but the new GM will NEED to ensure he's got a good handle on picking the BEST fits to keep.

Hope this made some sense. Ultimately, for me, I would keep them all (hence a failed GM :)) but thinking about it differently I'm hopeful the new GM comes with that approach. For some of us it will be hard to see some of these players go but if the return moves the needle forward short and long term... then I would support it. I have not looked that deeply into our full roster but I know we have a lot of "similar" type players and we need to shake that up along with the culture.

If the new GM is Mark Hunter, will they wait for the London Knights season to end before announcing it?

If it was decided, we'd be getting some leaks right now until such a time it could be officially announced.

But realistically, there is zero information out there and no good reporting on the team with AP down for the count recovering from his surgery. I'm frankly disappointed the Athletic doesn't have anyone to sub for him. This is where I really miss having Tom Reed around as well.

There are many clubs that don't have reporting from The Athletic, that and no good print journalists either. Seattle has one print guy who basically does useless Arace type hot takes, and nothing from the Athletic.

Mark Hunter would be a great Pick imo with deep ties in the OHL and how good our Euro scouting is could be really nice for us

Is there a possible candidate associated with any of the 8 remaining teams? I'd think if not this thing would roll quickly.

And they don’t rush guys. They have Mavrik Bourque and Lian Bichsel playing in the AHL playoffs. Bourque led the AHL in scoring this season. He has 10 points in 4 AHL playoff games.

Imagine the reaction if they whine about their coaches/FO not giving them NHL opportunity. Instead it's a good team and everyone knows they have to really earn it over a few years of apprenticing in the AHL. And that helps those prospects get better.

McFarland .. who was given a job in the front office when no other teams would. He was here from basically our first season up thru 2014-15 … he has many friends still in the front office . One would think it would be a dual role for him to come back home
