Sturm really didn't lay any of the blame at Quinn's feet, put it mostly on the players and Quinn being dealt a bad hand. Said coaches always first to get the blame when a team doesn't perform. An obvious truism, but still it's good to hear a player not just shift the blame elsewhere.

Yeah, though he clearly talked about players not understanding the game plan. And while he placed the blame on the leaders of the team to help (which, fair enough), it does seem sort of odd to me. Why aren’t they getting it? Is it a personnel issue? A communication issue? Surely if you’re in the NHL you can stick to a game plan?

Well, he did say Quinn dumbed things down as much as he could, so it wasn't for complexity's sake.

Yes but also every system out there purposely has holes to allow players to express their own creativity. That’s what makes the best players. We have maybe 2-3 players that have that ability in any capacity and the rest should have absolutely no ability to do anything outside the system.

If your system is so complicated the players you have cant understand it, thats on the coach. You have to develop a system that works for the players you have.

I guess you can dumb down the concepts as much as you want but it doesn't mean much if the sum of the concepts don't synergize very well as a system.

I finally listened to the Pierre McGuire interview, and it is rare to find someone who is so incredibly smug about never accomplishing anything of note in their career after being giftwrapped unearned opportunities for decades upon decades in their field

Congrats on knowing tidbits Pierre, it sure helped you out when coaching the 23 win Whalers in 94 and as an advisor to the 33 win Senators in 22, they really couldn't have done it without you

I still haven't listened because I have a six hour flight coming up to Dublin on June 2 and I've been thinking that the flight will seem a lot shorter if half the length of it is taken up by one single podcast 😂
The skipper is gonna be unhappy!

This season, Grier must think hard about selling at the deadline or extending veteran guys who are great in the room. Say Sturm is willing to sign a 2.5x3 deal, or the Sharks could trade him for a 2nd... should he make that trade?

If Smith and Macklin sign, I would lean towards signing Sturm. If they dont, I would take the 2nd.

Trade Sturm rather than take that deal - he's not actually very good on the ice and I'm not really an advocate for paying guys to be "good in the room."

Sturm is a now 29-year-old 4C - he's horribly miscast in any role with greater responsibility. On a good team, he's a guy you try to upgrade on before you reach the playoffs, too - a #12-13 forward. By the time he's 32, I seriously doubt he'll have a place on any NHL team. I'd rather take a late 2nd in the hopes that player will be NHL quality in four years than hang onto a depth forward for $3 million, who will rapidly be worth nothing at all.

Solid analysis.

Now say Granlund would be willing to sign a 4x3...would you sign him at all? How much would the return have to be to trade him?

If Nico Sturm can return any sort of draft pick, you trade him to a contender and talk to him in the off-season. He'll have put in two and a half seasons during the hardest part of the rebuild. He deserves another shot at a Cup and we need the draft picks.
He literally already has a ring. We need Sturm a lot more than we need a 4th round draft pick. I would extend him ASAP.

I feel this is definitely a case where you talk to the player and see what he wants to do. Especially if you want to re-sign him; showing some flexibility or letting him have a say in the outcome probably earns a lot of good will.

Just offer him more money than anyone else. Sturm isn't turning down 4x4.

What does having a ring change a player's desire to compete for a Cup when the opportunity presents itself? You think Sturm after spending the past two seasons here doesn't want to go back to the playoffs? Of course he does. If we sign him back when he becomes a free agent, that's fine but foregoing an opportunity even at just a 4th round pick because of some ill-conceived perception of need for a 4C veteran is doing the team a disservice. The team will not lose out on a single thing renting Sturm at the deadline and finishing this next season w/o him for a month and a half. Give me a break.

I'm not exactly inclined to extend Sturm but I'm perfectly content with talking to him about going where he'd like to so he can compete in the playoffs again. Sturm's public showing of honesty only means so much to me. He had a bad season last year and on the ice, he's at a stage again where he's addition by subtraction.

"Just trade him at the deadline then sign him in the offseason bro" is something fans say every year yet it happens maybe once a decade.

And if it didn't happen with Sturm, nothing would be lost.
I would rather have a big smooth skating two way center who wins 60% of his draws, is the first forward over the boards on every penalty kill and is a leader on and off the ice than a 4th round pick. Especially since Sturm is still young enough at 29 with very little NHL tread on his tires (less than 300 career GP so far) that he should maintain his current level of effectiveness for at least the next 4-5 seasons.
