Here’s my spreadsheet for upcoming UFAs, each team’s cap situation, and a trade tracker. I update the spreadsheet daily. I use CapFriendly to create this list and AFP Analytics for the contract projections.

Edit: Spreadsheet has been updated with AFP's latest projections and I added a new section for RFAs.

Yeah. Plain and simple...we can't ice as good a team as this year, without getting extremely creative via trade to unload cap or alleviate that burden somehow.

One thing to note is that Zadorov and Lindholm were in-season additions. The team the ended the season was different than the one that started it. They don’t have to be as good as they ended just similar to how it started.

Ideally with changes that improve on their offensive weaknesses.

That's fair. But in terms of going where we want to go...this team needs to be better not worse when it comes to facing next season and doing the thing that we want them to do. Relative to the "finishing team" final product in the playoffs. That wasn't good enough.

The totally bonkers thing about this...is that he did it vs opposing top players most of the time. Including Connor McDavey.

Which again...is straight up, the only way to actually defend against a player like that in today's game. Just have the puck. And don't let them have it.

And McDavey in particular is such a stupid baby and he hates having to play defence and like...go get a puck and stuff.

Re-sign Zadorov, Lindholm. Extra skaters just examples, doesn’t have to be Bains or Friedman.

Potential to offer 8 years to lower AAV on Zaddy, Lindholm and Hronek

The good thing is that there’s literally no way this will be the same team as last season. They have a bunch of cap space and roster spots to figure it out.

I’m not married to breaking the bank to keep the team together when it’s clear this team needs more offensive/forechecking punch.

Yeah. It's a pretty wild offseason when it comes to flexibility. There are numerous ways to earn funds. I hope they are not straight up shook ones.

Yes or not, Would you sign Zadorov to a 5x5 Contract if offered
Hell Yes.

Zadorov gives this team an attitude and swagger that we've rarely seen from previous versions of our team. He seems well liked in the room and the coaching staff as well. Big, mobile Dmen are as hard to find as RHDs and I don't think replacing him would be easy. You can't just say "replacement D is X ft Y inches tall and Z lbs." and think it's a 1-for-1 swap, the intangibles play a key factor too. Namely the replacement's ability to buy into Tocchet's system and gel in the room the same. I think Zadorov is a priority re-sign for us both from an on-ice perspective and off-ice one as well, he makes our team harder to play against, I don't like the idea of moving players that other teams hate to deal with.

yeah this team right now is not really built in a way management really wants it to be. There were a lot of constraints due to Benning leaving a lot of crap behind and very little cap and assets and what we see is basically them trying to make things work to shift the identity and culture of the team.

Now the culture is fully reset and programmed into the core group, with this much cap and open roster spots, i can see them bringing in guys to build the team to their vision.

Let's be honest. With our management I think we are going in a complete crazy direction that noone will see coming.

It's pretty crazy how bad Hronek really was these playoffs. Hughes wasn't bad but Bouchard goal on-ice differential is plus 23 next highest among D is Brandon Montour at plus 8. Hughes plus 6 Hronek is minus 7.

do you think zadorov is a better defenseman than what 2020 nurse or 2021 jones projected to be? both of those guys landed their contracts on the basis of similar (but longer) hot stretches to what zadorov just had, but they were both high 1st round picks with a lot more pedigree, at a younger age, and with a much longer track record of top-4/top pairing play. oh, and those guys put up offensive numbers (albeit on bad teams and without quinn hughes in front of them) way beyond what zadorov has ever done.

i think zadorov is a third pairing guy who looked good in a short spurt as a #4. if the going price to keep him is as if he's a second pairing defenseman (or more) already, no thank you. but if they are paying him at that level, i'd hope that he has upside well beyond that so the team has some upside left to capture. hence, the chara comment.

as for the likelihood of getting him for 2 or 3 years - already said i agree with you that he's getting 5+ year offers. but he's a pretty confident (borderline arrogant?) dude - maybe he's willing to bet on himself and take a "bridge" deal at the dollar amount that he's looking for (~6m/yr) from the canucks which as you describe, offer a pretty good situation for him, with the hopes that he does become chara-lite (or develop a track record similar to nurse and jones) and can maybe command 9+ in a couple years in an inflated cap environment.
I'm not basing much of the cost of resigning Zadorov on his playoff performance (some of the sites that make contract projections have had in over $5MM all year). And he absolutely does not have to project as a better player than Nurse/Jones when they signed their nearly 12% of cap max term deals - we're literally contemplating paying him half that % over a shorter duration. That said, I think he's a better defender than either of those guys right now and it isn't particularly close.

It's pretty simple really. I think he's a guy that can anchor a 2nd pairing. and while $5.XMM may seem like a big cap hit, it really isn't for a guy who is going to get you 20-25 ES points while playing an extremely snarly (6th most hits by a defender since he broke into the league and only Gudas and Schenn have more on a per game basis) 20 minutes+ per night. I think there's upside to the TOI too.

We obviously don't agree on this player....which is fine and probably leads to more interesting discussions.

If they aren't re-signing Joshua I could see them trading Garland.
I think you can put Garland with just about anyone and he'll make them better. And to the extend that effort is contagious, it would be lunacy to move him.

I mean...you basically just illustrated why that doesn't work.

You still need a Top-6 Winger and a Top-4D for....3 million bucks. And that's already generous. Which i get it...we all want to be ambitious at this point...but i just don't see how that works.

Also need some spares. Can't go into the season with a 21 player roster. So that leaves 4 players to acquire at about $1m each.

Could be done (likely have to shift the line combos to make sense) but that's really tight.

It was always going to be tight this offseason. Either we spend 7mil on Lindholm and less on a top 6 winger, or we break that up a bit and get reasonable players in both positions. To me I’d rather re-sign Lindholm as he can play in the top 6 OR at 3C. And, it’s much easier to acquire a good winger mid season than it is to acquire a good center.

If we need a bit more space, fine, don’t re-sign Myers at 3mil. If you add in a spare player (0.8mil) that gives you 6.1mil to re-sign a winger and two defensemen. We will need to have holes somewhere on our opening night roster, we just need to decide where it is best to leave those holes based on which are easier to fill via trade or from prospects from within as the season progresses.

What does one have to do with the other? If I was management watching this season, I'd be leaning more heavily in planning an extension for Garland asap in hopes of saving money than trading lol.

That lil ball of hate could line up on every single line and not look out of place. For the price of his contract, he's definitely a bargain in this market

What are some players that could be had as cheaper reclamation projects on 1 year deals?

Klingberg @ 1.5mil
Domi @ 2.8mil
Monahan @ 3mil

Anyone else that comes to mind?

I’m fine moving on from hoggy if we can get an equal dman for him. He’s not the guy to pair with petey and he can’t play top line, and the 3 line hopefully stays the same…means he’s odd man out for some trade bait imo

Klingberg would be a PTO at this point after his injury.

I’d go Guenther + Hayton for Hronek.

Utah does not have any dmen I’d have interest that they would be willing to give up.
Utah wouldn't want Hronek they have Durzi and Kesselring and the possibility they move Guenther for almost anything is pretty much zero certainly not for a struggling D that wants 8 million

Klingberg and Monahan are slugs would not even offer them league min contracts.

Domi's an intriguing option. Definitely need some more skill on the wing, and Domi can create off the rush, which this team lacks.

100% agree on Hogs. It was his first taste of playoffs, he has that type of energy u want and he's so strong for a lil guy. Given his actual cost and age, there's no reason at all to deal him. He plugs into almost any line as well why get rid of a player like that? 1m dollars isn't hurting us even if he sat, lol. He's not the guy I'm trying to lose
