Always be wary of anyone who uses doomsday scenarios and says things are "dying" or "broken" (as opposed to acknowledging problems and suggesting solutions) because they'll conveniently find a scapegoat and next thing you know, we're trying to ban immigrants for some dumb reason. We're in a bloody skilled labour shortage in this country and we need everything from doctors to welders but whatever.

More to the nonsense 'point' being thrown out, that the "demographics" of Canada are changing and we'll all be playing cricket or some stupidity. Anyone watch the Canucks/Oilers last night? And when they showed clips of the celebrating fans in Edmonton, boy howdy did you see a lot of non-white faces in the crowd. People who aren't of European descent in Canada enjoy the game! Because it's a good game and has broad appeal. And maybe that's why there has been a push to say "hockey is for everyone" to not only encourage recent immigrants to give the game a try but also to remind those of us on the white shade of pale to be a lot more accepting of new faces at the arena.

Honestly, most of this thread is an embarrassment.

Was it ever really affordable though? I'm almost 30 and none of me or my friends parents could afford it growing up.

The kids from the out of town suburbs were the hockey ones
Out of my entire extended family, which is like 150 people, only 1 was able to play hockey because his father came to Canada in the 70s and was established and had a house paid off by the 90s.

It was extremely expensive but not how it is now.

The is country is importing welders? Carpenters?

Where is that happening. A lot of kids here would probably love a chance to become “doctors” but it’s much more financially beneficial to charge someone twice the price to educate them.

Hockey is dying in Canada, which is alright. Thinks do change, and that’s alright. Let’s not pretend kids are out playing street hockey as they used to.

And plumbers. And electricians. Most construction sites in BC have huge signs begging for skilled trades, and if you visit a construction site, you're hearing languages other than English.

And yeah, we're bringing in a bunch of temporary workers to pick food crops and work in fast food, mostly because they can't find Canadians who are willing to do those shit jobs.

Hmmm. Universities are filled with primarily Canadians too proud to do those “shit jobs” too?

It’s not wild to say hockey is dying. Maybe that’s a dramatic word, but it’s sure not as much of a focus culturally/nationally as it used to be.

It was a unifying factor for a nation with a large land mass. The original author isn’t wrong in saying it’s on the decline interest wise.

Teams continues to die in Brampton while the city council wants to build cricket stadiums.

Yes Hockey is dying in Canada. And the only way to save it is to bring the Cup back home to renew the passion.

Canadians must band together and get behind Canada’s team, the Edmonton Oilers.

Our heritage and the very fabric of our society is at stake. You either love your country or you don’t. Choose wisely.

Could be with young kids in any country not specific to Canada. They’re more interested in video games.
