Nice find , interesting.
I do wonder if it’s more cause Drai needs McD than the other way around
I thought I remember reading that McDavis had been outscored 5v5 in the playoffs when Draisaitl is not on his line. Not sure if that is still true or not

I like how posters keep comparing the 2009 Pens to this year's Oilers.

Scuderi-Gill were not direct liabilities to their team like Ceci-Nurse. Gonchar was better than any D Edmonton has. The 2009 version of MAF would definitely be enough for this Oilers team.

If you put the 2009 version of Crosby/Malkin on this year's Oilers, it would not make a difference.

I wouldn't do this if I were Edmonton. Marner will need a new contract. And the Oilers shouldn't use up valuable cap to a guy like Marner. Not to mention Hyman is a better postseason player at half the cost.
How much offense would McDavid be able to create on rushes with those two incapable puck movers in Scuderi and Gill?

They will get help when they leave. Edmonton hasn't drafted and developed a player outside the big two besides Bouchard who I'd argue is horrendous as a d man PP Specialist.

I would argue that none of the three mentioned are developed into the best versions of themselves either.

They are allowed to roam free with their talents, but they are not fully developed as complete players.

It’s true, McDavid and Draisaitl should be tied for 1st in playoff ppg instead of just being 2nd and 3rd which, honestly, just isn’t good enough

2009 MAF sported a sparkling .878 save percentage in the 2nd round in an era where it was harder to score in the playoffs. Adjusted for era that's even worse than what Skinner is doing right now, but the Pens were able to win the series, with Malkin in particular playing with a rotating cast of nobodies.

According to EDM fans, Bouchard is the second coming, so they need to make up their minds then.
You might want to check skinners stats this series.

Pens luckily won that series against the underachieving caps with rookie goalie Varlamov (who was .898, not far off from Fleury that series) but older, better, more experienced penguins teams could not overcome bad goaltending.

Was it a leadership issue? Complacency?

Scoring is just on aspect of playing hockey.
If you can't play at both rinks of the ice, you are a liability.

Ovechkin didn't win a Cup until he played a more complete game.

You really don't want to go throwing genius labels around at the same time you repeatedly show that you don't understand how the salary cap works.

Again, Crosby's cap hit was a higher percentage of the salary cap in 2009 than McDavid's was when he signed in 2019. Still is so. I'm not sure how I can put it plainer than that. If McDavid's cap hit is and was prohibitive to putting together a good team, then it would be safe to assume that Crosby's also was so in 2009.

If you don't understand how these things work, you can just ask.
Well genius, wrong again. Crosby took less than league max, McMuffin didn’t. It’s that simple.

Crosby would never agree to play 30 minutes per night, because you need to have energy to play elite in both ends.

For McPissy, all that matters is points. It is why they keep getting put together every playoffs, no matter the coach. Because they demand it.

They will never win with their attitude. Nobody cares if you score points while also going -1 and being a defensive liability.

When the argument is "X" can't be done, a simply rebuttal is to show when "X," in fact, has been done. Just because it's unlikely does not mean there isn't precedence for it to happen.
Point me to the series where a team won with sub .800 goaltending

Skinners career average is .878 and pens fans are pointing out a 7 game sample from 15 years ago where maf played that poorly. It's comical

Could be this one, it's not over yet!

We're not talking about the same thing, re: series vs years. The narrative that has been going on for years is McD and Drai needing more offensive help cause they have no depth. The goaltending, by and large, has not been good, but, there's historical precedent for teams still winning with bad goaltending (not just as bad as this specific series thus far, which, sure, is an extreme), which is what I was primarily addressing. So for years prior, cry me a river. For this specific series? Sure, Skinner is ass and he probably shouldn't even have played G3, but coaches are loathe to play goaltenders in the playoffs with minimal NHL experience, even if that experience is all bad.

More depth would be great but I feel with average goaltending Oilers could have beat LVK last spring and would be up 2-1 if not 3-0 vs Silovs and the Canucks. Perhaps thats where the disconnect is with Pens fans. I look at help as competent goaltending, which during the Penguins cup years, they got, for the most part.

So the Oilers team defense has no part in this? It is always just the goalies fault?

Look at the level of chances they keep giving up. Point blank shots from in close. Look at the heat map, the Canucks allowed less chances even though they had double the shots against.

Sometimes, context matters.

It’s a bit of a chicken and egg question. Dubnyk and Talbot were solid NHL goalies once they got out of Edmonton. Jack Campbell was an NHL goalie for Toronto and LA before he hit Edmonton.
That’s a tough D to play in front of. Trying to recall their last decent goalie. Maybe 40 year old Roloson or Smith?

In game 3? That's a complete lie I'm looking at the heat map right now.

How was Dubnyk a solid NHL goalie when he got to Edmonton? The Oilers drafted him and he had a terrible rookie year (on a terrible Oilers team).

Mike smith was good enough in his time here. He was too old and retired.

Jack Campbell can't cut it in the ahl.

Koskinen went back to Europe.

Dubnyk was young and played for the bad oilers

Talbot also played for the bad oilers. His last season they finished with 79 points and out of the playoffs.

The oilers ruining goalie thing is a bit of a tired meme at this point.

A tired meme is often at least partly true.
