Will fix everything
If I knew how obnoxious sports gambling ads were gonna be, I would have actively lobbied against them.

Honestly, I think the online sports gambling boom is gonna have some serious blowback sooner rather than later. As someone who enjoys playing poker, some people simply chase their losses a bit too much and get in over their head pretty quick.

The blow back has already started. The accessibility on phones/computers/tablets is already spiking gambling problems. It is also causing gambling problems in people at an earlier age.

A problem with gambling addiction is it has little to no physical signs as other addictions do so it is harder to get people early intervention/help. You rarely see signs of gambling addiction until someone is deep in. And with 24/7 access it is very possible to not see anything until someone starts stealing to fuel their addiction or they have services cut off etc.. With track/casino type gamblers you will start to see them missing functions/work/family time due to being at the track/casino but with sports/online betting they can be betting and be present at functions/work etc.. Though maybe not fully mentally present, they are at least physically there. Compulsive gamblers also have a high tendency to lie/hide their addiction out of shame. I know other addictions do also but a gambling addict will have an easier time of doing it because there aren't the physical effects that show like from alcohol, pills, or hard drugs.

There are also a lot of studies done that show that suicidal thoughts/attempted suicide/successful suicide are exponentially higher among gambling addicts. Couple that with a lot of people using gambling to run from life's problems makes for a bad mix.

If anyone thinks they have a problem with gambling please reach out to gamblers anonymous/a counselor for help. And absolutely if anyone is having dark or suicidal thoughts PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use the tons of resources available to you.

The study found that suicide rates increased 19-fold among men between the ages of 20 and 49 if they had a gambling problem and by 15 times among men and women of all ages.

I’m officially old. My daughter who is in high school came over after school ended because she had to show me a band she thought I might like. Which is cool because any way I can connect with her is awesome.

She tells me that it’s weird and different so I might not get it. Then plays it. It ends up being an artist I’ve listened to numerous times around her. It was System of a Down.

I’m f***ing old.

My younger spawn wants to try to listen to classic bands to figure out if she likes them or not. Yesterday she decided to try Pink Floyd. She dove into Dark Side of the Moon and she's clear they aren't for her. I was amused. I think next up for her attempts at classic rock listening will be Zep. I suggested she give Peter Gabriel a go. We'll see.

My daughter doesn’t go that far, because she knows I know music going back that far. She does try to sneak 90s artists and 2000s artists by me.

Like before SOAD, she tried to introduce to the Arctic Monkeys. Like I’m sure I existed when they first got popular

Funny, by my younger spawn was listening to their AM album after the Floyd... but that's because I introduced them to her. :D

She tries to find recent groups to introduce to me since I am regularly springing different musical acts on her in the car or around the house.

Neither of my kids really like anything current. My eldest is into Garbage, Linkin Park, Evanescence, and REM. My youngest loves Joe Hisaishi soundtracks from Miyazaki movies and The Megas.

Younger spawn has a list of things that I've played for her as a playlist and it's around 200 songs ranging all over the musical spectrum. I kind of enjoy that she has acts that I introduced to her in heavy rotation all the time. She's still seeking acts on her own which is also awesome IMO. We've had multiple conversations about how if someone is going on a rant about "music today", they're just too lazy to find something good and want radio or streaming services to do it for them.

My one minion's 5mo is a fan of Marty Robbins Running Gun, everytime I play it she starts kicking her legs and talks. She also likes Kick Start My Heart.

She's been here 3 days and I haven't slept at night as she insists on scooting up next to me. Her mother gets 3/4 of a king-sized bed and the wee beastie and I share the remaining 1/4. It's funny as soon as she sees me she starts scooting over.

I think there are legitimate gripes about "music today." E.g., how much production trends are ruining the sound of the natural human voice and eating all the blue notes by pitch-correcting everything, including even live performances. But there is a lot of good, interesting music being written, and the accessibility of recording + streaming means we can all discover musicians we might never have heard of 20 or 30 years ago, which is pretty damn cool.

Totally. I'm into a lot of non-mainstream stuff (Carpenter Brut, Perturbator, LukHash, to name 3 off the top of my head). But radio "marketable" stuff? Meh.

More that people are just nostalgic for something they heard in their youth and that they haven't had the visceral reaction to something since because in part they don't bother to try to find anything. I run across it in some social circles and it was the same complaint I used to hear as a kid when things I was listening to were being called crap by people who either wanted a new Beattles album or Elvis to tour or Hank Sr. to come up out of the grave.

Finding new, interesting music and musicians is very much an active pursuit.

I'm trying my hardest to imprint good music on my 3 year old twins. My proudest moment so far is my son putting his hand in his years when my wife played 'nsync a few months ago.

That's awesome. I have tried to let mine know that there are things that I don't enjoy but that doesn't make them any more or less worthy (trying to make sure they have no issue with "oh, dad thinks that is bad" rather than just that it isn't my cup of tea). Like, my younger spawn is big into K-pop and I know next to nothing about it. And honestly, I feel fairly weird trying to find out anything about it other than how their fans are masters of online SEO and algorithm stuff that still makes me chuckle.

Y'all are talking about the music your kids listen to, or that you try to steer them towards at very least. I just helped my 8.5 year old create a Spotify playlist so she can play it in her bedroom and I knew like 2 of the songs she wanted me to add. My daughter certainly gears towards my wife's pop musical tastes. Now my wife has a WIDE musical taste and she listens to a ton of music and that is who my daughter usually listens to music with as they do things together but my daughter only picked up the pop side.:confused::rolleyes:

My 20 year old is mainly hip hop/rap with some 70s/80s rock thrown in.

So I've been falling down the YouTube music rabbit hole for a little over an hour now and just letting it play what comes next and these played back to back. Not a single complaint about it. Though man do I miss these voices.

And as a bonus, something else I found... Chris' daughter Toni singing the same song. She has a beautiful voice.

My only complaint about doing that on YouTube is when it switches genres, and I don't mean from classic rock to 90s grunge but yesterday it went from Rush to Gordon Lightfoot so I guess Canadian was close enough
Mine can horribly genre jump because my musical taste is all over the place and add in that my family will at times forget to switch to their own accounts on the smart TV YouTube if they are watching stuff on it in the living room so I get their tastes mixed in as well. I used the "My Mix - Rock" option so it didn't do bad genre jumping tonight though. I went with YouTube tonight as I sat on my porch to relax vs doing a Spotify playlist cause I felt like getting some live music and covers mixed in.

Mine jumps too because of wide tastes as I go from country to heavy metal with classuc rock etc in between. The ex adding in her K-pop, Britney Spears and tagalog love songs ruin the algorithms.

My life for the next couple months will be sports in the morning, reading with YouTube on in the afternoon and evenings a mix of things. Though I have to say I can carry on a conversation in Thai as my minions don't prefer speaking in English now that they realize I can grasp the concept of what they're talking about

My daughter likes to say that I break the algorithm. If something starts as a playlist, it's likely to be all over the place.

Definitely some of my favorites along with bands like Papa Roach, In This Moment, and Avenged Sevenfold.

Nowadays I also listen to some Chinese, Korean, and Japanese pop/rock (mostly from the shows and anime I've seen). I'm sure I'm in the vast minority on this one.
