Shesterkin made his professional and KHL debut midway through the following 2013–14 season, recalled from MHK to close out the final 8 minutes for Spartak in relief of Alexei Ivanov in a 5–3 defeat to HC Ugra on 20 January 2014.[1] He was given his first start three days later, allowing two goals in a 3–1 loss to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl on 23 January.[2] In his eighth appearance, Shesterkin collected his first win, making 33 saves in a 3–0 shutout victory over HC Slovan Bratislava on 2 March.[3] Returning the MHL, Shesterkin registered a 12–7 record in 19 playoff games, along with a 1.75 goals against averange and a .937 save percentage, and four shutouts to help MHK Spartak win the MHL Championship.

While out of contract from Spartak and showing strong potential, Shesterkin signed a contract with perennial powerhouse SKA Saint Petersburg on 6 June 2014.[4] As the fifth-ranked goaltender entering the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Shesterkin was selected in the fourth round, 118th overall, by the New York Rangers on 28 June.[5]

I can't believe that after allowing the Rangers to have Henrik Lundqvist with a 7th round pick for all those years later, the NHL would let this guy be available in the 4th Round. What a miss. Looking like potentially the best goaltender of the generation.

You know the Rangers passed on him 3 times before selecting him too?? 6 Goalies were picked in the 4th round that year and he was the last one. Everybody is throwing darts - the Rangers got lucky.

So essentially every team passed on him, including the rangers 3 times. The madness.

Goalies are hard to predict. The majority of the greatest goalies were late round draft picks. It's hard to predict how someone from junior is going to develop to the NHL Hasek was drafted in the 10th round.

Rangers have the best goalie coach in the league. Maybe whoever we took would've become Igor.
Not to take away from what I can only assume is a goalie development talent that comes from some sort of deal with a djinn, but Shesterkin was a crazy good goalie in the KHL for years before he came to the States.

He was not quite that guy just yet in 2014

True but we went from Hank to Igor seamlessly and have put multiple backups on other teams as starters. The Ranger goalie tree is pretty insane.

Then you have Quick who was completely cooked but this year he was fan freaking tastic. To not give Benoit Allaire a lions share of credit ignores what we have seen from MULTIPLE goalies.

Lundqvist was in the 7th round. Sorokin, i believe in the third round. I feel like I can only think of Price and Brodeur for the great goalies drafted in the 1st round.
Depends on how you feel about Marc-Andre Fleury..first overall
Pick and Roberto Luongo..4th overall. Strombone is in the Hall of Fame and Flower almost certainly will be. Going way back to 1983 Tom Barrasso was 5th although you could argue his HHOF election

Ed Belfour wasn’t drafted and is a HHOF member

Sergei Bobrovsky was not drafted.

Goalies are, well, weird. I also suppose that with Russians than is a greater chance they won’t make than adjustment to Canada and America than Europeans and they need some adjustment.

Didn’t people say at the time Shesterkin was playing for Vladimir Putin’s favorite team which was loaded with talent?

Hasek, drafted 199th. Roy, drafted 51st. Kiprusoff, 116th. Miller, 138th. Rinne, 258th. Hellebuyck, 130th. Ullmark, 163rd.

Goalies are hard to predict.
I think Hasek was more a geopolitical thing (communism didn't collapse until about six years later).

Point taken that goalies have a long development curve and so they tend to be hard to predict. However, Shesterkin was clearly one of the top goaltenders of his age, as he had already earned KHL callups and crushed it in Russian Juniors. I think in that case it was more just bad scouting collectively from 30 NHL Franchises as opposed to something unexpected occurring.
