When the Islanders played in the Nassau Coliseum, it was 10 minutes. 5 of them being trying to get out of the lot at the exit. Now it’s about 25 minutes.

About 20-30 minutes away depending on traffic.

It kind of goes both ways, though. It's definitely nice living in an NHL market with that big platform for the local team.

On the other hand, you can be just as hardcore of a fan for a minor-league or junior team, at a small fraction of the cost and with far better connection to the actual team and games. As much as I enjoy the NHL, I would love to have some of that small-league atmosphere back and that is not accessible at all. Even if I travel to see it elsewhere, it's missing the local familiarity which is the whole point of the experience.

Kind of like restaurants. It's great to have a Michelin-star restaurant in your city, but going there every night is impractical and weirdly unsatisfying compared to doing the same at a local mom&pop.

I'm about 15 min drive from the WHL team, and a 40-60 minute drive from the nhl team.

I enjoy the WHL games on a one off basis, but I find it hard to make a deeper connection with the inherently quick roster turnover in that setting.

That’s a good point. It’s just as bad, maybe even worse in the minor pros. It’s a completely normal thing to lose your top scorer because the parent club needs a guy to sit in the pressbox. Virtually nobody stays around for the long haul. You might have 5 or 6 goalies in a season. You basically have to have a goldfish memory when it comes to the roster.

Does it have to be drive?

I’m ~30 minute subway ride away from MSG, it would take longer by car. I put 1/2 hour anyway to make others jealous.

Never seen a hockey game in that arena in my life though because f*** the Rangers.

Takes longer for me to get Newark and see the Tri-State area’s finest franchise in action.

Would have to fly. <1 hour drive to the closest SHL team if I feel like it.

I'm a 15 minute walk from the Canucks rink.

Y'all are making me feel fortunate. Never really thought about it.

6 hours roughly to Winnipeg, 8-9 to either Edmonton or Calgary. Probably 11 or 12 hours to Minneapolis (I think that's the closest American city).

About 20 min to Ducks arena, 45min to 1 hour to Kings. Go to both arenas when Avs are in town. And occasional games in between.

I'm 7 miles straight down Katella Ave from the Honda Center. With no traffic whatsoever that's a tinge under 20 minutes. But during rush hour, plus getting into the parking lot, parking, walking in through security, etc., it's closer to an hour if I wanted to go to a 7 PM weeknight game.

I chose 4 hours.

i live part of the year in N Sask (edm is closest) and the remainder of the years am in Phoenix, so I guess Las Vegas would be my closest NHL team. 4 hours either way .
