This is my completely irrational hope as well. Wheeler seems to think it could happen and then we'd pass on him too, he's got him falling to the Flyers.
It would be difficult for Adams to justify the Catton pick after Savoie and Benson in consecutive years. Catton could be the right pick, but I just think he would want to avoid the additional scrutiny with his seat getting warmer. (I think the pick gets moved for this same reason).

I suppose it would somewhat depend on measurables at the combine, if he really is 5'11" and 175lbs or so, I don't see that as a size issue. No one brings up size as being a problem for Ostlund who is an inch shorter and ten pounds slighter than that.

I wouldn't bank on any particular outcome between 2-14. Any of your favorite kids might be there.

Except maybe Luvshonov. But even him...you never know. I've never seen such little differentiation between the 10 picks after the 1st.

A lot of guys very high on Buium on the draft forum. Another lefty yes but sounds like he’s been playing and looks confident on the right side.

Wish I had more time this year to dig into some of these guys.

I like Yakemchuk, size, shot, good skater. Everything you want in a top 4 and probably there at 11.

Buium has a legit argument as the top d prospect in the draft.

Most polished arguably, no questions about the offense, reliable at defense, and all he does is win.

This org picks bpa now. If Buium is there at 11, real good chance he’s the bpa, and you immediately say f*** it to the left shot.

11. Buffalo Sabres: Carter Yakemchuk, RHD, Calgary Hitmen

Catton and Eiserman are obviously high-end talents to be available at No. 11. Beckett Sennecke has worked his way into this range on the back of his skill level as well. Catton, in particular, fits with the kind of forward they’ve drafted in recent years. And while they have shown a willingness to keep taking like-minded and built players, I do wonder if there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing. They’ve used nine of their last 11 top-40 picks on forwards (Owen Power and Ryan Johnson being the only exceptions) and if one of the top D in the draft is available, they should be all over it. A blue line of Power, Rasmus Dahlin, Mattias Samuelsson and Yakemchuk certainly has the size every team covets nowadays, and hey, maybe they can bring back the two-D power-play unit to take advantage of Yakemchuk’s shot and skill.

He's who Wheeler projected to us at 11, after we pass on Catton
I love Catton, I think he will he a 1st line player but I think Yakemchuk fits Buffalo's needs better. I would be happy with either.

Any mercurial euros that would be an appropriate pick at 11
Check out Helenius. He could be there at 11.

I think we are looking at

Helenius
Yakemchuk
Eiserman
Catton

I would be surprised if our pick wasn't one of them.

11. Buffalo Sabres — Konsta Helenius, C (Jukurit, SM-Liiga)

Helenius clearly is the top Finnish prospect in this year’s draft and for all intents, as strong a top-five candidate as we’ve seen out of the SM-Liiga in recent years, including Juraj Slafkovsky, whose draft-year production in 2021-22 (10 points in 31 games) pales in comparison to Helenius’ 14 goals and 36 points in 51 contests. In fact, Helenius, a natural playmaker and skilled power-play specialist, averaged 0.43 assists per game during the regular season, which is the highest among all Finnish draft prospects since Aleksander Barkov’s rate of 0.51 during the 2012-13 season.

Bottom line: There’s no need to pull an all-nighter to find the smoking gun that links the Sabres’ scouting staff and their draft-day decisions with the analytics department, which is another way of saying near-historic production levels by any draft prospect certainly won’t go unnoticed in Buffalo. The Sabres as an organization may have taken a step backward in their plight to end a 13-year playoff drought and, yes, they are already loaded with young centers of quality. But it’s doubtful the staff deviates from their MO of taking the best player available, at Helenius would be exactly that if he slips out of the top 10.

Surprise pick: Igor Chernyshov, LW/C (Dynamo Moscow, KHL) — On the heels of an impressive draft-1 campaign in which he averaged a point a game for Dynamo’s junior club, Chernyshov looked both mature and dangerous during a well-deserved KHL stint in which he appeared in 34 games. He hasn’t generated the kind of hype we’ve seen from Ivan Demidov and Anton Silayev, but Chernyshov is the kind of prospect who should have every NHL scouting staff on board due to his power-forward game and high projectability.

Only posting this because of Chernyshov. It's the first I've heard his name. But if he's a power forward guy with a high floor......and was PPG in the MHL.....I could absolutely see the Sabres taking a flier on him. He was 18th on Bobby Mac's midseaon ranking.

Thoughts?

I like him, he's more of the big body vice traditional power forward who'd be Surin, who can be bat shit crazy on the ice. He looks like the prototypical Carolina winger, big, protects the puck, has skills and can skate it. He needs to improve his shot but is very Necas like

It really feels like one of Catton or Helenius could fall out of the top 10, just like Benson did last year.

How do folks rank Benson against those two? How would you rank all three if they had the same draft year.

Benson has the best all around game. Catton is flashier offensively but no where near as tenacious. Helenius is very much like Benson in that he is almost always making the smart play, and has underrated offensive talents due to playing in the boring Liga.

I don't think there's any real separation between the 3 players, it's just a matter of what flavor do you prefer. Saying that though, I would go Helenius as he'll be a C in the NHL
